Rick Burrus and Mike Gaines (400 KTM /360 Hus) won the Novice class 'wit h a high overall pla cing , hav in g led since the secon d loop. Gary Hoots and Steve Lee (25 0 Yam/KTM ) were the early leaders , but had to settle for second and a class win . Jim Smith and Ken Evans (400 Yam) finished third . Leslie Klug and Michele Griffi n finished th e ra ce with a healthy lead over the other Powder Puffs. Leslie r ode the race on one of AI Baker's lU O Hondas after her own broke before the race. whil e Michele was on a 175 'H usky. The victory in th e ovice ranks went to Lori Farmer and Nona Ri chardson (175 C 'A/ Ca r). Cory Bonham and Scott Ward 250 Yam/Hon) led the Beginners all the way to win handily. Mark ' Kh iti kia n and Steve Lo renze (370 SUl) were the runners-up. and in ,tu m , follow ed in by Mark Keller and tC r a ig Clarke (5 00 Yam ) . Dick ,;S we n son and John Escujari ( 175 Yam) were fifth and class winners. Donnie Morrison returned after 'r ecu pe ra tion from a broken leg and sh ou lder incurred in October to win the Min class along with Kell y Kline. Both were on Yamaha 80 's. "T he course was rough and dusty and the key to success was often a matter of finding the right side trails. Cordis Brooks was so fatigued at .the end of his first loo p that .he had to slow down , for he couldn't hang on . 1 Q-38 rough ride Lyons MC , Sa n Diego . T ho rn burg gra bbed a n ea rly lead in the first lap riding on his home ground . Tibblin , riding his usu al desert ra ce form of holding back a littl e on th e first lap . was ha vin g bike problems. His engi ne didn't sound as smooth as usual and as he hit a whoop de do rig ht in front of us the back wh eel locked as the motor died . For a breathless second he hit th e ground and see m to hang th ere . T ha t insta nt the bike took hold . he rema ined upright , waved at his pits and took off over th e hill. Mechanical problem s took him out a little later. Paul Nachout was in for second place the rest of th e race while Finger and Secor were doing battle with Moreno and Braudaway, 250s against 125s. Somewhere along the line Pat Flanagan (O pen Novice) was more than holding his own in the top 10. It was T hornburg's day as he pulled the overall win by a three minute lead over Nachout second , Finger third over Moreno fou rth. Eddy fifth. Secor sixth, Novice Flannagan seventh over Dan Dibb eighth still shaking from h is cold wet muddy Baja ride . It wasn't ladies day on th e tough ' cou rse as Lorrie Da vid went over her handleb a rs and ra n over herself. Sh e finished the lap a nd started the next before throwin g in th e towel. Darlen e Cottrell went off and go t knocked co ld . Brought in by rescu e un it . she was still groggy and was taken in for a check u p . Only one more points race left for the season. On th e first lap Thornburg and Welk hi t home che ck in a dead heat and both number checkers had it that wa y. By th e next few laps Tibblin and Thornbu rg ha d the lead far ahead to th em selves.
