Cordis cut to the inside of a tu rn shortly after that and took the lead. b ut Mo rgan . passed him again in a sandwash . They swa ppe d places a few t imes mo re before Brooks got in front to stay , leading by less than a m inute aft er 25 mil es. Craig Kinnamon (250 Suz ) was in third all the way around th e course , but Tom Kelly (250 KTM ) really had to work to get up to fourth . His partner Marc Cartwright (250 KTM ) had seized a mile and a half out on the co urse and returned to the pit s, where Kelly had left with a four minute deficit. Zoller, who had been inactive for a couple of mont hs. kept the team in the lead. AI Baker (410 Hon), riding with Malocco, was busy racing with Kinnamon , who rode two straight. Positions.stayed static for the next loop , but on the following one , the Kelly/Cartwright team got up into third , a fter Kinnamon 's partner John Steen (250) Yam) had his mon oshock unit come apart . Throughout much of the race , there were only two minutes or so separating th e leaders, despite th e fact that Baker was riding the race with a blown head gasket. Coming into the finish. Zoller had upped the lead q uite a bit. but in the last mile or so , Ba ker hit a pot hole and crashed . T hough he broke his collarbone in the crash , he got up and finished t he race in seco nd pla ce. There was a bit of a wait u n til Ca rt wright came through , and it was third pla ce , second 250 for him and Kell y despite all the troub les . Kinn am on and Steen were in next . with Cra ig on boa rd for the final loop. • Lee W ilson and Rick Muller (175 J KTM /DMG) fini shed fifth . g-ettingB t he first sm a ll-bore honors after a spirited battle with two other teams £ in th eir class. They mov ed up from n running 12th on the first loop . Dea n") Kirk and Mike Col e (250 Hus) were_ ~ t he first Amateur team at sixth j, overall. Phil Stumbo (250 CZ) crashed off th e sta rt lin e and ret urned to the pits with a bent bike. H is partner, Den nis Greene (H -D) took off five minutes after everyone else and moved into 31st. Stumbo go t his bike unbent and t hey moved up to seventh by the end of the ra ce. Behind them was a nother consistent 250 Expert tea m ; Monte Lee and Tony Steffins (250 Hus/Yam) . .
