Pentons pound Mosiermx E By Dave Nielsen ARLINGTON, TEX., NOV . 7 .The Penton powerhouses freight· trained the big boys again at Mosier Valley MX Park today, with prime movers Ricky Kidd l' l-< Q) ..c a and Bobby Pickard at the controls, and Dickey Nowell rounding out the local Penton Expert class wrecking crew, Intermediate 250 and Open ' classes also got rear views of these Austrian mounts, as Bruce Hallmark and Brian Wilson made the most of highly refined suspension systems on Mosier's shifting sand and jump sections. The track itself . had undergone some major rerouting, and was in fine shape for the 265 riders who enjoyed ideal weather. Second-moto and last-lap victories highlighted the action in many of the 14 classes, proving again the competitive and spirited nature of racing here in the hotbed of T exas motocross . Even in the O ver 30 class , it went down to the wire in the final rnoto between Tom Cone (360 Bul) and Tom Hollister (250 Yam) , as Cone got by Hollister just before checker time for the overall win . In Senior Minibike , Tony Nielsen ' (Hon) was about to upset first moto winner Craig Riddle (Hon) in the second round until herangled with a lapped rider and Riddle scooted by, scant seconds from the finish line. As reported in recent weeks , the 100cc class has emerged as one of the best for close racing. and today was no exception. In the first rnoto, Johnny McGee (Suz) led the IS -rider field until Mark Loving (Yam) edged past on lap two, None of the first five were giving up , as fractions of a second and a foot or two here and there would make the difference, On the last lap , Todd Young (Suz) of Homer, Louisiana nipped McGee for second, . with Don Burns and David Sanders Q) u Q) '~ ,= . , I Att~,ntio.n~ A,~II , Cl " • . The deciding second moto saw McGee get th e jump again (the parts for his RM 100A fInally came in ). but Loving held securely to second with first overall in the bag, the pressure eased by Young's disappearance from third place during lap three. Behind Loving (1-2) and McGee (3 -1) came many·time class winner David Sanders (Suz, 5-3) of Greenville and Longview's former mini ace Don Burns (Su z, 4-6) , Another last chance charge was a winner for George Jensen (Yam) in 'Division II of 125 Novice, who put the move on first moto winner William Sims (Hon) between the white and checkered flags of the final heat. Another tight lead race went down in 250 Novice, as 125cc graduate Robert Tuscana (Suz) upset quick Todd Fox (Pen) by narrow margins in both motos , The afternoon's IntermediateExpert program was a mind blower, with great attention going to the 125 Experts. Disappointed with his performance here last time. Danny Doss was back and obviously pumped up to pit his Banke-Doss tuned Honda against th e powerful Moto-Tex FMF Hondas of Mike Jones and Jimmy Martin, while Arlington Suzuki's Louis Presley lurked in the field of 17. Doss made his holeshot from the gate stick through all eight laps of moto one, chased by Martin , Dave Boles (Hon) , Jones (who came from last to fourth) , and Presley (who ran third the first six laps) , MikeJones took the second moto all the way, but Doss collected first overall by Keeping Martin over his shoulder and Jones in his sights. Presley dropped out, and Boles' 3-4 was good for fourth overall. Ricky Kidd did the job in Open Expert , holding Wyman Priddy (Bul) at bay both motos , but probably didn't expect the 250 Expert win as well, until class leader Bobby Pickard slowed in the final with loose cylinder studs. Pickard's 1-4 put him third behind Penton teammates Kidd (2-1) . a nd Dickey Nowell (3-2), while Huskymounted Tim Riddle (7-3) took fourth . • Results in Results Section. Mike Jones.
