N .F.' ed last weekend at the J a ck h a m m er National beca use of electrical problems. Don Sanford has been spendi ng a lot of time in northern Cal ifornia . when no t riding he has been helping District 36 officia ls adapt the locals to the na tionwide A.M .A . way of doi ng thi ngs. He has gone about it in an in telligent and pleasant way convincing the clubs of the benefits of standardized enduro rules and procedures. This likeable man has made a lot of friends here - and a good impression for the people he represents. ISDT rider Mike Hannon (Bul) dropped two points in the 250 A cla ss. 175 A class rider Brian Lee lost four points to trophy in his group . In the Open A John Troutt took second overall on his IT 400c with a minus one. He beat out Ben Bowers (Bul) on a tie breaker. More important , John beat his good buddy George Hendrixs (Hus) who scored two. Both of these guys ride for Fremont Yamaha and the riva lry b etween them is beyond expressing if Ge o rge gets a paragraph in Cycle News then John must have two . They ride on the same minute and in crucial moments when they can't agree on whether that next check is four te nt hs or five tenths of a mile ahead they have been kn own to stri ke eac h other viol ent ly to · em p h as ize op inions (enduro riders never brawl). T he only thing th ey have in common is an extra -ordinary consistency in scoring high - George is top enduro rider in the district and John is number two . The Big Boot - the fourth enduro of the dis trict's fall schedule - was outstanding in every sense. The talk at the finish line amongst the riders, even the A riders, was full of praise for the Fa r West M /C . All checks were accurately placed, time and distance factors were right on and the course was extremely well marked. The enduro was nearly a disaster , however, be cause someone removed most of the arrows and signs over the first and second sections. The layout crew discovered this early Sunday morning and immediately began reposting some one hundred markers .. The run was challenging for the good guys and makeable for the biginners. There were no bottlenecks, but there were two hills in the second loop which gave almost everyone some trouble. Int elligent planning allowed for the fac t that riders would become bogged down at these places, therefore the club made sure that there was p lenty of room for riders to pass . The day was good - cool , overcast and a little misty in the hig h places. There was very little dust which was radical departure fro m the sit uation at most Nort hern Ca lifornia end uros during this very dry year. T here was no p rotests according to District 36 Enduro Stewar? Lynn Ritner, and only one complaint. An A rider co mplained that 'he couldn't read the clock at t he finish line. The checkers wiped his goggles off and turned hiIil towards the clock - sometimes you
