At the end of the first try Jerry Cruise on a Suzuki was in first place with a 7:08 second run . After the dust had cleared in the second round David Carder on a Bul was setti ng in first with 7:07 seconds and Duffy Douglason a Yamaha was third with 7:09 seconds. Jerry and Will rounded out the winners with second and fourth place. That's a little close for comfort for th e time keepers. Henry Polley piloted his 750 Triumph to the top time of th e day in the Exibition class . . After setting the time of 6:40 seconds on .his second try , and watching to make sure no one beat him , Henry said that when he sent over the top he almost missed the landing ramp by jumping so far. NEB . , OCT. 10 1976 500cc World Champion The Cavaliers MC of Plattsmouth held their last climb of the year on their 230 foot hill. For the 150 riders , the hill was fairl y easy and smoot h up to 120 feet. For t he next 30 feet it was nearly straight up, and if the rider did not have enough speed to ca rry him over thi s area it was all over. Several crashed bikes tumbled all th e way b ack do wn th e hill . It's clea r why hillclimbers use a "dea d m an" kill switch on th eir bik es. The lightweight classes ran on the left side of the hill which was not quite as steep. Mark Scolz on a 250 Bul ta co set th e fastest time on th is side with 6 .3 seconds over. This was his second win of the day. Earlier Mark had been th e only 125 rider to see the to p of th e hill wh en he worked his R M Suzuki over in 8.2 7 seco nds. Ma ny riders had their bik es for sa le . - winter is on th e way. Ron Roseburg (500 Yankee) was sucess ful. By th e time he came to the line for his second try the bike was sold. Just to clinch th e deal he ca ptu red third place with a time of 7.7 seconds. The prediction was that th e big b ikes would hav e to break int o five second times to ha ve a sh ot at the top time award. Nearly all the 750 and Open class riders had once tried when Gary Waddell (800 Triumph) came to the line. (Gary won the number one plate at th e National in September and everyo ne was wondering what he would do to this hill.) When the dust had cleared he had stopped th e clock at 5. 9 seconds in th e Open class . Henry Polley (650 T riumph) from Texas seemed to have a good cha nce to catch Ga ry, but crashes foiled his efforts.
