NOV. 4 The scen e was one wh ich wou ld have fascinated a R ay Brand bury or a Go re Vidal. Here. in the la rgest meeting room of the fashionable Pasadena Center, the head physician of Los Angeles County/USC Hospital Burn Ward , Doctor Zawicki , with Nursing Supervisor Cheryl Desmond at his side. was addressing about 1000 attentive people, seated at large round executive-type tables . It might have been a serious meeting of medical minds or a convention of pharmaceutical salesmen. But " of course it wasn't (or we wouldn't be DeCoster and friend watch the birdie writing about it), it was an awards party for the Hook and Ladder Enduro. And Doctor Zawicki was there to receive the biggest " trophy" of all , a donation of roughly Sl7 ,000 . The presentation was made to Doctor Zawicki in th e form of a huge symbolic check , about 4 feet long, but in fact he will not receive any cash. To avoid bureaucratic hassles , Doctor Zawicki ,,;11 ,specify the equipment that he needs and 'the Pasadena Fire Department Women's Auxilliary will make the purchases. then donate the hardware to the hospital. This year the equipment will consist of sensitive scales for monitoring the nutritional gains (or losses) of the patients and audio-visual- monitoring equipment. All of this was very interesting to the audience. but it wasn't all they had come for . They a lso had co me for the gold , and there was plenty. Approximately 700 riders won trophies: And since no trophy " is complete without a p ictu re of tli!; proud winner, a professiona1 photographer was set up to photograph each winner as he receiv ed his trophy from no less than MX champion Roger DeCoster . DeCoster was a model sportsman, with a friendly word for each winner. I. After finishing his trophy presentation duties , DeCoster graciously signed autographs for abou't 45 minutes on everything from sma,Il scraps of paper to the wooden bottoms of the trophies. .• SRA Gamblers Paradise Enduro LAS VEGAS.
