Through a quirk in th e law (called a loophole). th e property had reverted , back to Uncl e Sam. The alert SRA layout folks decid ed to run th e cou rse right through it and what more natura l place for a check. righ t? Wrong! It seems some enterprising locals (not bikers) sto le th e windm ill and burned the buildings to th e ground. Scratch 'one check.. . The fini sh line was located on the outskirts of La s Vegas almost within the shadows of the strip ho tels . and the thought of fin ishing plus the sight of th e goodie pl ac es seemed to rejuv enate th e group , making the last five miles almost bearable for those riders used to a 60 mile fun gig at California City. The handy little fin isher pin turned out to be a slot machine with a real dime sticking ou t. J ust a little class to add to a memorable even t. A watchful member of th e group noted that the radio and safety units of IRRC seem ed to be keeping a watchful eye on th e whole course and all the road crossings. It is people like th e IRRC that add so much to the sport of desert rid in g and m ost of us have a te nd ency not to notice or give them th eir du e.
