CAI.:. , NOV. 5 I ~ the opening moto for the 250's : David T a ylor grabbed the lea d in the first corner with ROIl Turner and J eff Vidic in hot pu rsu it. However , Jeff ' Vidic lat er slowed off of Da vid Taylor's fast pace. But not Turner . as Ron slowly closed in on Da vid for th e top position. Bu t Turner 's effort was a littl e too late and Ron ha d to settle for seco nd in th e opene r. Round number sa w a reversal from th e first with Vidi c a nd Turner taking th e holeshot in th e first turn a nd Taylor was running in 'fourt h behind Mike DePhillips. Taylor qu ickly moved by Mike DePhillips for th ird and closed in on Turner . Taylor gave .it his best shot, ' but it was not enoug h as Vid ic took the win , T u rn er-second, a nd Taylor in third . Aft er th e first two five-lappers , it was a three -way tie for the lead with Vidi c, Turner , and Taylor all with four po ints with th e remainin . T aylor also continued his streak in " King of th e Hill" with his fifth e consecu tive win in th e two-lap event tha t features th e top two rid ers from th e 125, 250 . and 500 pro classes. OCT. 31 Nobody wore costumes , and the Great Pumpkin never did show up . but nevertheless V.a.T.E . picked Halloween day to present the first motorcycle event in ' the Gorman /Mt. Alamo ar ea in over four yea rs. The autumn leaves wer e brown and rust . and some of th e more rusty rid ers were bu sy coping with a 26-m ile first loop followed by a Ifi-miler for the fin al circuit. The Expert win went to Bernie Schreiber. The Bultaco teamster. maintaining his momentum after a 12oint win over Don Sweet at the San Diego National the previous Sunday, took th e event rather impressively. Runner-up was Marland Whaley-while Mark Eggar posted a third. Both of the Honda team riders were aboard last yea r's works bikes , as their shortstrokers were already back East for the Rhode Island National. The loop started at the Gold Hill Site and ran along the Piru Creek Trail . up the Miller jeep slide, along the eastern side of Mt. Alamo Road and down the Snowy Trail. The Forest Service has announced that the Snowy Trail will be closed the first of the year. V.O .T.E . and a couple of enduro clubs have volunteered to do th e work necessary for the Service to consider re-opening th e ROpular trail. Schreiber's win was his ninth of the year; Whaley has eight. With two rounds left on the ATA sch edule Whaley now has to win both to deprive Bernie of his thi rd straight number one plate. Since both Whaley and Schreiber are scheduled to ride the final national round in Michigan on Saturday. November 13, they will have to fly back right aft er that trial to compete in San Diego the following morning. . Duane Feland won th e Amateur class . trailed by Rick Spruell. But the big news was Debbie Evans ' third. It tra nsferred her to the EXpert class. She is the first and onl y Expert rated woman in the nation. riding a TY175 ' sponsored by Yamaha . Ba rry McMahan took top Novice, his , second straight win .
