You don't need a new bike to race. T his is a 1967 Suzuki. \

My machine isn't set up
It isn't hard to get ready for bracket
road racing. The main th ing is to have
a well-maintai ned motorcycle , with no
loose parts or vita l fluids about to fall
off ·or out. Center stands must be
removed , (it 's easier than it looks), and
side stands must be taken off if they
protrude and are likel y to hang up on
the pavement while cornering. One number pla te is all that's
needed, securely fastened to the front
of the machine, with a· number choice
cleared with WERA officials. Oil
. drain plugs must be safety-wired. To
safety wire a plug, the hot tip is to take
it out , clamp it in a vice , and drill a
sm al l diameter hole straight through
fro 'm on e flat to another. Or, leave it
in and drill straight through. Ift ha t's" •
impossible. drill one hole straight up
from the bottom , (not too far , or else
you 'll hit oil) , then an intersecting hole
from on e side.. Slide safety wire
through 'the hole , twist it u n til it
resembles a braid , and 'secure it to
something so that the wire is pul ling
the p lu~ head in the -d irection to
tighten It. In ot her words, make the
safety wire influence the bolt in a clockwise direction (see illustration).
My bike is too slow
No problem. Bra cket racing is
based on lap times, not m ach ine size
or class .
My bike will blow up
Many riders tend to underestimate
what their machine can actually 992-9595
Safety wire should pull bolt heads clockwise.
