Once you've had a taste of racing on pavement ,you need no COnVInCIng. But 'sta rt ing out , ac tua lly go ing out to a track and raci ng for the first time, is the ca use of many fea rs. T hese com mon fears often . . . stand In the way of a prospectlv~ ra cer - ~he guy who wa nts to do It. b u t ca n t ge t up th e mental m om en tum to o~ercome the .rea l '. and . imagined p it fa lls, (not to mention pit crashes.) Bu t seriously . here's a look at some of th e most·mentioned fears felt , (a nd imagined) , by street riders who say they want to go racing . but. .. It's too dangerous : . Most street riders , ( o ~ street racers. for that ~atter) . .don t .wea r adequate protective clot hing - and everybody who has ridden motorcycles for any time at a ll knows that everyone crashes sooner o r later. Blind tu rns. gre ase left . by ca rs. st ra y dogs. roc ks a nd gravel from adjacent emb ankme nts, pa rked ca rs. movin g cars. drunks . idiots, m ental cases . pol ice ca rs. . tic kets . jail houses . fines, licen se suspensions, and on and o n threa ten . the speedy street rider. At the track, corner workers armed with colorcoded flags warn of p roblems in blind tu rns and elsewhe re on the co urse. -Course workers clea n u p a ny debris, mop up ' oil . or set out traffic cones to warn of treacherous pavement. Mechanical sheep (ca rs) are kept off the track. Police are powerless as estatic racers zip by at twice and three times the maximum legal speed limit. And pe rhaps most important of all. just in case something goes wrong. there is ' competent medical hel p standing by. If a rider crashes , one or two a mbulance crews are standing by for immediate first aid - or transport to a nearby hospital. A crash truck crew is rea dy to ha ul a ny da maged machines back into the pi ts . And m edi cal insu ra nce is ready to pi ck up ' th e tab for any ex pensive bo dy re pa irs .... If someone has to crash . th e best place to do it is a t road race -track. But that's not to say th at crashes are inevitable at the track. T h ink of thi s - a t a recent O ntario roa d race . 250 riders co m pe ted in eigh t races averagi ng 10 laps each . In conventional road ra cing. classes are determined arbitrarily by machine size and type (such as Grand Prix . Cafe. Production) . In bracket racing. classes J et rich for banking. ~
