Am ateur Ro bert Burns did a fine job holding Expert Bruce Heiland to the third in moto one, but he didn't show for the last two races. Steve Polson, Griffith's racing buddy and fellow Expert, took over where- Burns left off. No one cou ld ' even get close enough to Steve Griffith to even give him a pinch of comp etit ion and he went on to take the checkered the final mot os. Polson was second the last two races, followed by Bruce Heiland moto two, and John Silva moto three. Griffith picked up the overall win and the trophy. • ... Resultsin Results Section. In the first moto, J eff Illingsworth to ok a long lead for ,himself over Jeff Wingate. Wingate had b een working on l1Iin gsworth for the . first three laps , trying with all h is might to get by, but couldn't qu ite make it . In the secon d moto, Michael Dunlap took off with a burst of power, determined to make a better position for himself, since coming in fourth in his first moto. He got his lead and held it over the rest of the pack for the en tire moto. The third moto fou n d a restless Jeff IlIingsworth ready and waiting to go . Having a second in his second moto , he was more determined than ever to regain first and take .the class win. Jeff jumped into the lead and had a fight on his hands, holding back Jeff Wingate from taking over. They both had some keen competition from Robert Laughlin and Michael Dun lap who were fighting like crazy to establish third and take over second. Robert held on tight to third down to the last lap when he went down and Michael got . by. The checkered flag found Jeff IlIingsworth taking home the gold, with Jeff Wingate a well-deserved second, and Michael Dunlap, third. • October 24, .1976 Stoneyford, Ca. The thunder the crowds heard wasn't from the sky, it came from the likes of Jamie Einbund and Greg Boren riding all out for first. It carne from Paul Lane bouncing back from a' third in his . fir st moto , to take a first in his second. Peter Sabat was relentless in his efforts to take the lead from Jamie and Paul. These three were rushing intoturns and bouncing ' off jumps,.. practically, three abrea st. The second moto found Paul lengthening his lead but ever on the look-out for Peter an d Greg. Peter Sab at was pushing Paul Lane with all his might bu t went down in the turn at th e bottom of the drop-off almost taking Einbund and Boren with him. And so it went throughout the race. The pace was so fa st an d furious thefans were a lm ost afraid to watch.
