Sam Jones and Dick matched points for the day with Sam making it an even fourth . . Larry Smith showed style and speed, ran away with both motos in the Novice class, an d top spot for the day . Kid Coffman was righ t behind while Bob Beasley ran a consistent 3-3 over the desert terrain for third placing with Chuck Trons b opping over from Palmdale to pull off fou rth slot . .Arn ie Adkison led a dozen Amateurs home with a clean sweep on his super Honda with . Pat Terlizzi right on his heels. Mind yo u , to their Mini Track on top of the hill and that 's a whole new ball game. But they love a challenge and their riding showed it . Kurrie Henricksen wanted to win and that's what he set out to do . He had some stem competition from Ron Williams who wasn 't about to go unchallenged. Neither was Jim Busby who gave it all he had, but had problems and only raced one moto, Kurtie got by Ron and managed to set up a nice lead for himself, and so it continued through all . three motos with Ron hanging in there chal lenging Kurtie wherever and whenever he could. The overall win of the day went t o Kurt ie He nricksen with a well-deserved second going to Ron Williams riding for his grandmother and grandfather Airc one, • Results in Results Section. All the Pro classes ran together o n the cour se backwards (counter-clockwise ). Rob Norgaard (Kaw, 1-2) led a ll but the final lap in the final moto. The incredible John Tessitore on a 12 5 DG Honda, having earlier passed Kenn y Frost, then took the lead from Norgaard and with a sec on d pl ace in the first motd won overall. In the 1 25 Intermediate class, Kenny Olson won the first moto with John Sotelo (Yam) second and Tom Holland third. Overall winner John Sotelo pulled out the .stops in the second moto with . rapid crossings of the whoop-dee-docs and gained a 200-yard lead by the finish. .Pat Haworth, Mike Moore , and Chuck Trent were swapping about the followin g positions whil e Sotelo was • getting ahead. Aldana wins By Pattie Prest idge PHOENIX, AR IZ., ocr. 24 Superman David Aldan a (H-D) led the Manzanita Raceways MfA Pro Half-Mile race today fro m the second lap to win. Aldan a had followed Gene Romero (H. D) for the first lap, but engine problems sent " Burritt o " b ack into an eight h p lace finish. Fast time setter John Allison (Yam) was second after passing a tight Dan McWhorter (Yam) and Mike Collins (H.D) battle for third. McWhorter and Colli ns we nt back and forth all the way to the en d of the 12-lap even t , as did Chuck . Pal mgren (H.D) and Vern J ohnson (H.D) behind them. Ted Davidson (Yam) won the Junior Main easily after setting fast time for his class. In the Novice Final, Eddie Lawson rode his Bultaco to an easy win after a dramatic holeshot. The race was originally scheduled for Saturday, but rain forced postponement until Sunday afternoon. The clay track surface, drying like adobe a fter being water-logged overnight, soon broke up and developed ru ts and holes. One of the day 's most spectacular' crashes · happened t o Expert Rick ' Kraft in Time Trials. • Riverside HS MX shootout By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., ocr. 15 High Scho ol Motocross got off to a big start at Corona Raceway with all the - Riverside schools participating in the season opener. 20 The riders, although riding u nder their school name were riding as individ uals un til som e technical m att ers can be worked out in the '$4,OOO,OOO insurance p olicy the Riverside Unified School District had demanded. Pa ul Ballow of Arlington broke up a North sweep in the 125cc Senior class and missed taking it all by on e poin t behind Jim Lawson of North. Jim's teammate , Tory Franks was third. Dwight Wilkinson of North had La Sierra's Bart On asch playing foll ow the leader in the 12 5cc Intermediate but it wasn 't th at easy for teammate Budd y Boydston who was strongly challenged by Arlington's Terry McCreery. Buddy was ab le to squeak out the third by one point. ' Paul Ballo w again picked up his second, second o f the ni gh t and blew a . triple vict ory for North in t h e 500cc Senior class. Pau l ca me abo u t as close as anyone can to grabbin g all the marbles b ut his firsts weren 't helped by his final moto third, especially when No rth 's Bill Schneider was sitting With two seconds and fin ished with a first. Ron Martyn , another North rider brought home the third. • Results in Results Section. Hillclimb; Someth}ng new By·Ann A. 'Powell ORANGE, CAL., ocr. 24 The new 1976-77 season of hillclimbing got underway again at Saddleback Park's Matterhorn. After a light rain earlier in the week, the hill was smooth and extremely fast. Dick neRosa, riding an extremely hot Yamaha 400, managed to 'se t a fast time of 7.87 sec on ds in his first run in tli.e 400 modified class. · That became the mark to face all riders. It held throughout nearly the entire first round o f competition . Then came Ron Ture, all the way down from San Jose . True was t he last man to ride in the lineup, and h e wanted th at win. He put the power to his big Norton in the Op en class. This was the only No rton entered, and with True hanging on for dear life , the two of them crested the ' Hom in , 7.71 seconds, a new record time. Mackel was the second man to ride in the Open class, and everyone knows that he is "King of the Matterhorn." In order to hang on to that title, Mackel . gave his super Tri every ounce o f power, called out every bit of speed, added his o wn best ability, and topped the hill with a breath taking 7.00 time ! The crowd was wild, and spectators fro m both th e top and bottom of the hill knew th at t hey had truly seen a great ride. . • Tidwell collects big purse By Elaine J ones CORONA, CAL., ocr. 20 It was a big field of Open Experts at Corona Raceway Wednesday night to run for the bucks and get in shape for the Pro race at Phoenix. Odds were on Eddie San Roman to repeat his semi win in the main . It didn 't work out quite that way as Lance TIdwell shot off first when the green fell with San Roman second and Stan Kinsey third. Stan held the third for one lap b efore Peters went blowing by on the front side. As the laps started to go down it was still Tidwell , San Roman and Peters and the three of them started pulling away from the rest of .the field. Meanwhile, back in the pack Steve Fortune started to m ove on Kinsey an d got by him on lap seven the same lap Don Tortorelli went out with bike problems. Dylan Neihart went on the m ove with his new 750cc Yamaha and passed Kinsey on the nin th lap. Meanwhile 'up in fro nt Mike Tidwell is ~etting so me ~d .of pace, turning laps In the low 23 s WIth San Ro man right behind him . When the checkered fell at the end of 15 it was Tidwell, San Roman and Peters in the win, place and show spots. Mike also added the 250cc TT and Half Mile goes to the night's work. - •
