Wri te t o : Saturday Riders DDMC 8228 Sale Aven ue Canoga Park , CA 91 304 By the t ime this co py of Cycle News hits the news-stands, the U.S. Sp eedway season will be well and truly over and I will be en rou te for Britain an d a British winner . .. I m ust be nuts! Before I leave sunny California, I wou ld like to t ake this opportunity of say ing " th an k you" to some of the folks who have helped m e during the season : To Bell Helmets, who h ave been terrific to me ever sin ce m y first trip to Ame ric a, b ack when Christopher Columbus wa s a boy. (A nd Sonny Nutter too !). Also thanks to " Don McGoggles ," (that other we ll-known " Sc ot sm an" at Scott , USA), to Bakersfield promoter. Digger Helm an d his wi fe, Theda, who reall y helped the Bandits to win the Le ague ; Torco Oil, Just ice Bro thers, Ken & Judy Mae ly , (who "su ff ere d " u s for six months !), Malcolm (Go ld Medal) Sm ith an d t he boys at Malcolm 's Riverside motorcycle shop. They tried hard to get me to speak 'American ', but I think that customers at the shop are in for a big su rp rise when they hear all the staff now talking with Scottish accents! (Och , it's a Braw, Bricht, Moonlicht , Nich the noo!) Finally, a big "Get Well Soon," to injured Bakersfield Bandit, Brian "Thumper" Short who sustained a badly broken right leg in a crash at Irwindale. "Thumper" was in top fo rm at the time of h is accident an d wo u ld defmitely h ave qualified for the Nationals, had it not been fo r th at injury . Still, t hat 's Speedway ... a very hard way to make an easy living! Whilst I am at it , co u ld I also say " Merry Christ mas" to everyone ? It sure would save a lot of cash on postage stamps and cards! Who says the Scots are m ean? Bye for now. May your bagpipes never have a puncture and y ou r Torsten Hallman 's never crumble ! Sun day Riders DDMC 12051 Kirkcolm Court Northridge, CA 91 3 24 DIRT DIGGERS The rea l thing Lane Campbell's report on the Ascot National (October 19 edition) had a few very offending remarks on the motorcycle that is still very de ar to my and many o ther of your readers' hearts. Three lonely independen t Norto ns were there that night and they all managed to make the Expert Main event aga inst all those fancy XR 750s and factory Yamahas, plus all the bif bu cks sponsors (ex . Evel Knievel, et c. and dam near won too! The buck passing st atement as quoted one observer, "Gee there 's more Nortons here in the p its than there are o n th e street." Evidently his ob server doesn 't get up to Griffith Park Observatory or the Ro ck Store on Sunday or many other places where motorcycles are on the st reet. That leads me to wonder how many Harley-Davidson XR750s and fact o ry Yamaha OW 72s his observ er has ever seen on t he street . Those Norton engines are the clo sest thing th ere t o something that is sold to the public in a sh owroo m. TOM MESSER Glendale, Calif. BERT HARKINS Herts. I thought that may be if o ne of the fa m o us Cycle News co rrespondents t old abo ut all t he benefi t s o f rep orting it mi ght motivate more p eople t o go to work . To begin you have a perfect o p ening for asking riders what makes their b ikes faster than yours. Sometimes they will give aw ay sec ret s just to get their name in the paper. It is also a way .to get your name in print if yo u don 't win a lot. You also receive a bi g chec k for each report sen t in [ha, h a). . The Hook and Ladder Enduro drew upwards of 15 ,000 people. Eve n the mini-enduro drew 300 entrants, which according to your own reporter, Ron Schneiders, is more than a normal D-37 enduro. This proves co n clu sively there are thousands . of people here in Southern California who want and need family riding eve nts like this, arid what 's more, th ey are willi ng to pay fo r it. There is certainly a lesso n here either for the C. E. A. or some savv y promoter like Ro n Burpo. The more people we involve in our sport , the better off we 'll all be . And what better way to figh t the Sierra Club than with family events like this. Besides, I'm just getting too old for those killer down-hills.
