Trans-AMA round fhree By Charles Morey SOUTH EDMESTON, N.Y., .OCT. 10 ' The world's best known motocrosser, Suzuki's Roger DeCoster, reconfirmed the already established belief that he is The .Man in top line motocross by staging an impressive double moto victory at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center Trans-AlvfA event. DeCoster's win was an identical replay of his last year's ride at Unadilla where he and Suzuki teammate Gerrit Wolsink had finished 1-1 and 2-2 in their domination of the race. _ The pair almost did it again. Wolsink did actually finish second behind DeCoster in both 40 -minute-plustwo-lap motos, but he was penalized a full lap (drop?ing his second moto placing to 14th) for riding outside the boundaries of the track. The penalty, witnessed and enforced by AMA referee Ron Denny, was not apopular decision. The problem started when Pat Richter, a talented California KTM rider, made an error in judgement and paid the standard fee - he bailed off. The . crash demolished a haybale and course marker on :t he outside of a righthand sweeper 'nea r the foot of the announcer's tower. When Dr. Wolsink ' came around the next time, die track workers were in the process of repairing 'th e course marker, and Gerrit went wide on the tum, outside of where the marker had been. No one was passed; it wasn't a shortcut. But he had, nonetheless, broken a rule. Things became more complicated when no one notified Wolsink that he was being penalized. Apparently, in tile rush back to the pits to , ecure any tempting "sourvenirs" before the crowd was allowed in to see the riders, the team had not checked the posted scores and detected Gerrit's 14th placing. By the time he found out about it, the protest time period had expired, and although Denny listened to arguments, his decision stuck. For Gerrit, it marked the end of a very frustrating day which began witli a continuation of the "Leathers vs. Nylon MX Pants " argument at the riders' meeting [Gerrit lost there, too) and wound up with a dump from a solid second to a seventh overall. Thusfar it's been a bummer series for the Dutch dentist. -, Kawasaki's top contender in this year's 500cc National MX series, Gary Semics, was the most "together" American of the afternoon , starting both motos with sixth place or better starts and working them into a final 6'2 second overall tally . 2 Gary was well on his way to making it a fourth place finish round one until he crashed on the final lap just after passing Adolf Weil with two laps to go. Gary, as he put it later, " saw stars" in the get-off, and it let Brad Lackey and
