By Maureen Lee G ARD ENA, CAL., ocr. 8 It was a racing evening planned for whatever ,your dirt track racing fancy is - Novices and Juniors on the half-mile and Experts on t he IT course. The Novices led off. The Junior Semi became two-by-two competition. Randy Gibbs and John Matherson settled out first and second, then came a space and there was Jim Halkola and Brad ~icks. Craig Armstrong (H.D) had a charge going on Nicks but over d id it and went scooting right up, but not into, the hay bales in the north tum. J im Mertens ran off with the Novice Main, pursued by Eddie Lawson who couldn't get up to hi m. Then came DOl] Hogue an d Randy Marnola. Mamola, who tends to take road racing lines th ro ugh the turns and often gets p assed in the pro cess, was dro pp ing back as Dave Lujan and Don Bailey mo ved up to m ake a real threesome with Hogue. These three we re whe re the ac tion was, at ti mes a blan ket could have covered them. As they all sh ot for the flag Bailey popped an exhuberant little wheelie as he e merged right then in the third spot. Neat racing, guys! Scott Pearson got a slight dr o p on Davidson in the Junior feature but Ted was soon steaming alo ng in the lead, the n came Rod Sexton, ' Randy Gibbs and Steve Fortune. Davidson, really laying it down in the turns lap after lap, pulled away from Pearson but at the same time Scott was putting distance between himself and Randy Gibbs who held down third. Steve 'Fort u ne was also moving and took over fourth from Sexton, a spot which kept him as the high point Junior for the Ascot half-mile season. The Experts The Experts had three direct transfers to shoot for ou t of two heats. First heat Randy Scott (Tri) got down in to tum on e first; but J oh n Hateley (Tri) squirted by hi m in the esses to take th e lead, with ' Bill Oliver on a 500TT Yamaha righ t behind hi m. Aft er one lap, Alex J orgen sen (BSA ) was in th ird righ t behind Sco tt ; and Oliver was back to fo urth. Hateley took off wit h th e lead wh ile Scott and Jorgensen fought it out for second and third, swapping p lace s back and forth. At one point J orgy near ly came off right after Scott had gotten himself all crossed up and they were really sho oting' for it . As the heat ended it was Hateley, J orgy an d Scott with Oliver and John Gennai (Yam) fourth and fifth.
