It was a racing evening planned for
whatever ,your dirt track racing
fancy is - Novices and Juniors on
the half-mile and Experts on t he
IT course. The Novices led off.
The Junior Semi became two-by-two
competition. Randy Gibbs and John
Matherson settled out first and second,
then came a space and there was Jim
Halkola
and
Brad
~icks.
Craig
Armstrong (H.D) had a charge going on
Nicks but over d id it and went scooting
right up, but not into, the hay bales in
the north tum.
J im Mertens ran off with the Novice
Main, pursued by Eddie Lawson who
couldn't get up to hi m. Then came DOl]
Hogue an d Randy Marnola. Mamola,
who tends to take road racing lines
th ro ugh the turns and often gets p assed
in the pro cess, was dro pp ing back as
Dave Lujan and Don Bailey mo ved up
to m ake a real threesome with Hogue.
These three we re whe re the ac tion was,
at ti mes a blan ket could have covered
them. As they all sh ot for the flag
Bailey popped an exhuberant little
wheelie as he e merged right then in the
third spot. Neat racing, guys!
Scott Pearson got a slight dr o p on
Davidson in the Junior feature but Ted
was soon steaming alo ng in the lead,
the n came Rod Sexton, ' Randy Gibbs
and Steve Fortune. Davidson, really
laying it down in the turns lap after lap,
pulled away from Pearson but at the
same time Scott was putting distance
between himself and Randy Gibbs who
held down third. Steve 'Fort u ne was also
moving and took over fourth from
Sexton, a spot which kept him as the
high point Junior for the Ascot
half-mile season.
The Experts
The Experts had three direct transfers
to shoot for ou t of two heats. First heat
Randy Scott (Tri) got down in to tum
on e first; but J oh n Hateley (Tri)
squirted by hi m in the esses to take th e
lead, with ' Bill Oliver on a 500TT
Yamaha righ t behind hi m. Aft er one
lap, Alex J orgen sen (BSA ) was in th ird
righ t behind Sco tt ; and Oliver was back
to fo urth. Hateley took off wit h th e
lead wh ile Scott and Jorgensen fought it
out for second and third, swapping
p lace s back and forth. At one point
J orgy near ly came off right after Scott
had gotten himself all crossed up and
they were really sho oting' for it . As the
heat ended it was Hateley, J orgy an d
Scott with Oliver and John Gennai
(Yam) fourth and fifth.
