Fremont MX By Steve Castillo FREMONT, CAL., SEPT. 23 Bill Johnson (Yam) and Phil Crane (Suz) did some handlebar banging tonight in 250 Pro. In round one Larry Wosick pulled out the stops on his Husky and left the rest of the pack at the line, Wosick cruised to an easy win with Bill Johnson not far behind and Phil Crane third. Moto two saw Johnson and Crane go '!t it . It started with Bill Johnson pulling a super holeshot on his 'l.uick Yamaha with David Woodhall (Suz) seco n d . Phil Crane soon worked his way past Woodhall and set out after Johnson . After two laps they were tight. Crane was riding right on the edge of disaster pushing Johnson super hard. In one berm especially, Crane seemed to gain a little on Johnson. On the last lap Crane tried to dive under J o hn son in that berm . While Johnson came down off the high line, Crime tried the low line, and as all junior scientists know, no two pieces of matter may occupy the same place at the same time. Something had to give and both riders went down in a giant crash. From then on it was a race to the fla g, literally . Both riders go t back up quickly but Crane's thro ttle stuck. Bill Johnson kicked his Yamaha b ack t o life and took off for the flag. The y finished no more than three seconds , apart. Johnson go t the overall with his 2-1 score while Phil Cranepicked up second overall. Larry Wosick ran into trouble with some of the Intermediates that were combined with the Pros but he still managed to get sixth, good enough for third overall. Crane was also busy in the 125 Pro race winning with a 2·1. Charles Longmire who hasn't been to the pay window in a longtime showed up for second place money on board his Honda. • Results in Results Section. MacMurray tops AMA Speedway SACRAMENTO, CAL., SEPT. 24 Rich MacMurray of Reno, Nevada defended his No. 1 spot in AMA Speedway points by winning the Western Division Championship at Cal Expo. Before one of the largest crowds of the season MacMurray piled up a perfect sc o re o f 15. The victory was in some doubt ri ght up to the last event of th e evenin g. Mike Rooney, Sacramento, h ad com p le ted his rides in even t number 19, endin g up with a total of 14 poin ts. Roon ey 's only loss came in event number five where he c ame in a close second to MacJ\lurray. The stage was set for the las t event when MacMurray had to face another of the " go fasters, " Mik e Faria. / Fari a was sec ond to MacMurray in overall points for the season , and if any one had a ch ance to catc h MacMurray it should have been him . If Faria won and MacMurray came in second there would hav e to be a run o ff between MacMurray and Rooney. MacMurray jumped in to the lead, Faria was close all o f th e way for the four lap s. Mike tried both th e in sid e an d ou ts id e lanes, but Ri ch was n ot to be denied the title and held off Faria to cla im the championship. That left R ooney second: Faria along with Duan e Yarrow had II p oin ts, tied for third. The fif th place was sh are d by Ron McGill and Randy Dav is with nin e poin ts apiece. U Monterey S1 0 MONTEREY, CAL. , SEPT. 25 Monterey's bi-annual semi pro short track opened and two families took home a total of five trophies. The Cahoons of Salinas had two seconds (100 Novice, 125 Jr-J and a first (360 J r.), while the Busbys of nearby Marina, had a first (100 Novice) and a second (125 Novice) . The 250 Expert ra ce, saw newly-made Expert, Rocky Robinson (Suz) come through the crowd to finish second, behind Randy Bereman (BuI) who had it from start to finish. Keith Day (Yam) continued his winning ways, taking the 250 Junior class in easy fashion. Because of heavy requests from th e riders, this series, which is normally five Saturday nights, has been extended to six and will include ever y Saturday night in October. • Results in Results Se ction. Buttner wakes up Desert Bums H.S. By Mota Depo SPARKS, NEV. , SEPT. 26 During the hot summer months the desert racers hibernate. With fall in the air the first race of the season always shows up the tired bodies and bikes that are not yet fully awake. But there are some desert racers that spend the summer motocrossing and assist in that awakening, very rudely, by blowing the sleepers in the weeds (sagebrush). Dick Buttner (Hus) riding out of White's Cycle in Carson City was that rude awakener. He followed Lonnie Murphy (KTM) through the pits on the first of five 18 mile loops, passed him going out and extended his lead to about five minutes at the fmi h. Lonnie rode hard to maintain second, but. on the last lap another summer MXer Dwight Snodgrass (Hus) passed him after moving up consistently throughout the race. Lonnie received a welI deserved second Open Expert trophy. Some other notables were: Paul Boise (lIus) won the Open Novice class but. was so far ahead they thought he was lapped and gave first place to T. Main (Yam ) who was actually second. The Marines landed w ith Russ Wyant (Yam) second 125 Novice ; A. Scott (Yam) was first, The Pioneer Barber Shop (o n e of the few sponsors in Northern Nevada) had three riders in the top ten overall Lonnie Murphy Open Expert third, Conrad Stitson (Hus) Open Expert fifth, and Mernie Irwin (KT M) Open Amateur ninth. The Desert Bums threw a good ra ce it was marked well, there was some new virgin desert which was b itchin ' and disputes were handled efficiently by referee John McKay. They also are havin g a no t h er race on November 7, which has the potential of bein g a d esert classic. The BLM has limited entries to 500 ' and they have 350 entries already.
