ORE., SEPT. 26 Bryan Bird (Yam) rode a steady, cool race in the Mini Expert class winning all three motos. Bryan says he is thinking of giving up the Mini class to concentrate on the 100cc class. Watching the 250 class Quniors) showed another Junior is well on his way to the Intermediate class . Yamaha-mounted . Jerry Berggren not only won all three 250 Junior motos but won two of the Open Junior motes, missing six straight wins by a , flat tire. Surprise of the day was,'Mike Gregson aboard his CooKawBuiYam. Height., PA 19020 LODI, CAL., SEPT. 25 The Westside Eagles closed out the short track season at Lodi with another fine program. Although it was opening weekend for deer hunters, we had a near-normal turnout. Everybody was anxious to get home early, as the San J o se Mile was the next day. Tracy Hays (Yam) came through with wins in the 8Dcc and 1DOcc Mini Expert classes. Scott Baker (Yam), recently up from the Mini ranks, put it to the other 100cc sportsmen. Debby Rocha (Yam) struggled for a long time in the 125cc ranks without much success. She moved up to a 175 Yamaha and has been giving the boys fits since. Usually a good starter, she got off in the lead again and was able to . hold it for several laps. But Gabe Burrola (C-A) finally passed her and she had to settle for second. Steve Nicholas (e-A) tricked up his machine with a new frame, glass, and other refinements. He looked real fast, J:>lacing second behind James Green (Yam) in 250 Junior. • Results in Results Section. Startup MX By Esth er McAllister STARTUP,.WASH ., SEPT. 19 The Northwest Motorcycle Association made their annual Pro _ Series stop at Startup MX Park, attracting riders and spectators from throughout the state and parts of Canada. An early morning fog left behind enough moisture to keep the dust down before giving way to bright sunshine and temperatures near 80 degrees. Open Pro Mitch Simmons displayed his usual flashy style while gassin' his Bellevue Suzuki-sponsored RM370 to a clean sweep in both motos, followed to the checkered each time by Aurora Cycle-sponsored Randy McAllister (Mai). Randy had the holeshot in mota .numb er two but Simmons dived under him for the lead and their positions stayed the same for the rest of the mota. Chuckanut Cycle's Dana Johnson earned his winnings the hard way. Despite a cracked hub he finished third in the flrst mota, then with some help from his friends, managed to fasten a . borrowed rear wheel on his RM370 in time for -t h e second mota. But in all the excitement everybody forgot about gassing up his bike! So, while running in third again, Dana signaled his plight to ' his pit crew - they got the message. After a quick stop for gas Dana got back in the race to take fourth, giving him third overall. The 250 Pro class provided plenty of excitement as Rick Benek and Mitch Simmons (in his second ride of the day) made a real "Bul-fight" of it . In t~e end it was ole' Benek with Simmons second and smilin' Brian Morgan taking third, (You may recall a couple issues ago, Cycle News correspondent Sue Sykes wrote about the theft of Benek's trick Bultaco from Puyallup Raceway following a night motocross there. By a weird chain of events Rick and his But are Jiappily reunited, but the thief remains at Iarge.) As the "Golden Throat" of Startup track, Ric Calhoun, refers to him, it was "Desperado" Duke Coleman (Han) ' emerging triumphant in the 125 Pro class with Pat Jacobson (Han) working his way up through a lot of traffic to take second. Marc Wareham (Hon) fought it out for ' third overall; Mel ' McCormick (Suz) was running second and charging until a crash put him out of it . Duane Bowen, Scott Templeman and Scott Cameron (all Honda-mounted] each, in tum, threatened the lead. Dan Fitch, in only his second race since moving up to a red plate, got the holeshot in mota two and led three-quarters of the III'St lap before he and his Aurora Cycle RM Suz. parted company on an off-camber hill; In a special added race for Old Timers, Seattle's Don McCandless rode his Husky automatic to a III'St place finish, John Barker (Yam) took second, and Bill Doug1iss (Kaw) finished third. Todd Dougliss (Kaw) , son of Bill, took a trophy home too. He was first overall in the 100 "B" race after a hot contest. Canadian Mike Eyre (Han) had won the first mota and was leading the final mota when an unfortunate crash during the white' flag lap cost him a few places. He still earned second overall. When Eyre went down, Lucky Mertes (Suz) zipped on by to take the flag for first place. However, Lucky had had his problems in the first mota, but his 6·1 added up to a third overall. Greg DeMuth (Bul), back after a few weeks away from racing, was in fine form as he went 2-1 for the 250 "B" class. Brad Davison was the recipient of a special trophy donated by David Redwine, operator of Hillside MX Track located near Moses Lake, Washington. Redwine, an Open class Expert motocrosser himself, singled out Davison for his outstanding riding skill and determination displayed during the running of the final 250 "B" mota. • Results in Results Section.
