CMC Carlsbad: Tomlin and Foland By Patti Trotte r CARLSBAD, CAU F. , OCT. 10 When the sun crested the mountains today it was not the usual gentle m id Autumn rays that hit the Carlsbad ra cetrack but the merciless sun of the sum mer . It was hot , dry, and extremely dusty today. The Car lsbad up hill and downhill were deadly as any mo isture t hat t he ground had gotten durin g the night evaporated. It loo ked like asphalt, and rode lik e a gian t wash board. I ov er heard a m an say t hat sin ce the up /do wn hills hadn 't killed anyone yet the track mu st be in pretty good cond it ion . The Open Pro s got the first shot at the track today. Prior to the race the riders were laughin g and having so me fun with each other but whe n the signal is given to start th o~e engines its ti me for business and everyone is rigidly serious. Track'N'Travei Maico rider Val Tamiett i is o nly a few races away fro m winn ing the title of CMC po in t leader and van winner so he see me d to be m ore serious than anyo ne Val and his in cr e d i b l y fast Maico have been dominating raci ng this entire year. As th e first m o to got going Jeff Folan d (KTM) was off the line and around the tum before anyone else . Val Tamietti and Dan Steele (Suz) buttoned down the tw o , t hree spots and thats exactly the w ay the whole mo to went. Mot o two had a little mo re action. Fo land again w as off first, follo wed by Tami, Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) Dan _Ste ele (Suz) and Fritz Schlegal (CZ). When t he. riders were com ing down the " Downhill" T am i missed a shift and dro p ped back in th e pa ck giving t he second to Pettigrew , third to Steele and fourt h to Schlegal, Fritz held th e fourth place fo r several lap s an d then surrendered it to t he rapidly ad vancing Tamie tti. Wit h Fritz . bumped fro m fo urth and Pettigrew drop p ing back in the pack it was Fo land, Steele and Tami. Tami got fu ll on- the wick to try and pass Steele, but Dan was ab le t o out gas Val and as Buzz Cro It waved th e checkered nag Dan kn ew the coveted second p lace was his , alo ng with the second pl ace money.
