CMC Carlsbad:
Tomlin and
Foland
By Patti Trotte r
CARLSBAD, CAU F. , OCT. 10
When the sun crested the mountains today it was not the usual
gentle m id Autumn rays that hit
the Carlsbad ra cetrack but the
merciless sun of the sum mer . It was hot ,
dry, and extremely dusty today. The
Car lsbad up hill and downhill were
deadly as any mo isture t hat t he ground
had gotten durin g the night evaporated.
It loo ked like asphalt, and rode lik e a
gian t wash board. I ov er heard a m an say
t hat sin ce the up /do wn hills hadn 't killed
anyone yet the track mu st be in pretty
good cond it ion .
The Open Pro s got the first shot at
the track today. Prior to the race the
riders were laughin g and having so me
fun with each other but whe n the signal
is given to start th o~e engines its ti me
for business and everyone is rigidly
serious. Track'N'Travei Maico rider Val
Tamiett i is o nly a few races away fro m
winn ing the title of CMC po in t leader
and van winner so he see me d to be m ore
serious than anyo ne Val and his
in cr e d i b l y fast Maico have been
dominating raci ng this entire year. As
th e first m o to got going Jeff Folan d
(KTM) was off the line and around the
tum before anyone else . Val Tamietti
and Dan Steele (Suz) buttoned down
the tw o , t hree spots and thats exactly
the w ay the whole mo to went. Mot o
two had a little mo re action. Fo land
again w as off first, follo wed by Tami,
Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) Dan _Ste ele (Suz)
and Fritz Schlegal (CZ). When t he. riders
were com ing down the " Downhill"
T am i missed a shift and dro p ped back in
th e pa ck giving t he second to Pettigrew ,
third to Steele and fourt h to Schlegal,
Fritz held th e fourth place fo r several
lap s an d then surrendered it to t he
rapidly ad vancing Tamie tti. Wit h Fritz
. bumped fro m fo urth and Pettigrew
drop p ing back in the pack it was
Fo land, Steele and Tami. Tami got fu ll
on- the wick to try and pass Steele, but
Dan was ab le t o out gas Val and as Buzz
Cro It waved th e checkered nag Dan
kn ew the coveted second p lace was his ,
alo ng with the second pl ace money.
