In the 125 Novice Division uB u, Mike Vergara drove all the wa y from El Paso in order to compete in the Grand National Championship qualifiers, wo n the fi st r mota, but got punched out in a corner by berserko Jerry Kamp in the second and had to settle for sixth overall. Mickey Coggins ended up winning Reid King and his highly tuned Honda dominated the 100 class, Kerry King simply pulled away from the field at the start of each 105 cc Mini mot a a nd won it all. Randy Kacir (Bu l) from Pt. Lava ca. bl asted down the start straight and through the first tum first, but Butch Allen and his Rokon had other ideas. He immediately block passed Ka cir going in t o the second tum and began moving away in the lead. Allen developed mechanicals and Kacir took the fir st mota win followed closely by Butch Jennings o n a Suzuki fro m Lo ngmont. In the second mota Jennings won, taking first overal l, but had to work hard, fighting off Randy Kacir for the victory. The 250 Novices kept it in te res ting, as usual, in the first t urn. Dave Fredricks put his Yamaha in t he lead in t o t he first turn, crashed, an d took at least half of the field down with h im. As mo st of the 250 crash-and-burn kids were scraping themselves up off of the ground, the firs t four or five riders went bounding away. Chuck Schoenfeld, who recently took himself and his Husky out of m o t h balls, sailed to the first mota win ; then fo ught his wa y through the pack in mota two to take first overall for the day. Michael Gilkey, from San Antonio, was second on a Can-Am and Jay Smith, on a Suzuki fr o m San Angelo, was third. The most co m p et it ive o f all Amateur classes, the 125 Intermediates , had a few surprises during the day. Scrambled scores kept the final results in doubt but when the scores were posted it was Neill Co o p er 's second mota victory which put him and his Suzuki on to p of the heap . Second was Jerry Rigby on a Ho nda, and Butch Maiden was third aboard a Yamaha. Rex Weed, fro m San Antonio, took his Honda to victory in bo th motos th ough he had a t ough t ime getting around Gerald Reid during the second mota. Mark Villareal was second overall and Gerald Rei d 's second mota p er forman ce nette d him third overall for the day . Ky le Landrum, from Corpus Christi, dominated t he Mini Senior class, but the racing for second through fifth was close and spirited. . Clay Cauthorn emerged in seco nd overall and Keith Davis was third. T he 105cc Mini class en ded in a three way tie for first bet een Bryan Taylor, David Beckham and Jaime Killion , but Taylor won it by virtue of his seco nd moto win. The surprise performance in the Expert races had to be the super ride put in by Scott Zettner in the 125 class. Sc ott holeshot the first mota and then for about seven laps of a te n lap m ota, we nt head to head with New Braunfels veteran David Daniels, holding him off. Daniels (Yam) won both motos while Zettner followed home each time on a Can-Am. Wade Woodall (Ya m ) and Bruce Finley (Hus) swapped thirds and fourths, Woodall getting the nod for the overall. Doug Archer fought hard fo r his overall victory on a 250 Bultaco in the 25 0-0pen Expert combined class with a 1-2 score. He was aced out in the second mota by eventual second overall Greg Seitsma (Yam). • Alford first at Whitney Hill By Diane Polley WHITNEY, TEX., SEPT . 4 T he 240 foot Lake Whitney hill had plenty of tr action . In a lot o f cases th ere was to o mu ch, as the riders fou nd ou t when th ey suddenly found themselves o n the ground. The catchers re ally had their work cut ' out for them in the smaller classes. There were t wo added at t ra ct io ns during the climb, at half time Jim Wilson tried to take his J eep Renegade o ver th e hill, but had to stop just short of t he top of t h e h ill. T hen just be fo re the climb ended Ro nnie Long brought his hot air b alloon o ut and took it up for a rid e. In the 125 class Tracy Davidson on a Yamaha m onosh o ck pulled wi thin three points of Sunny Holm es for the class r cham p io ns hip wi th another fi st place. This is one of the closest races in th e series. Tracy started climbing after the season had already gotten under way bu t he caugh t o n fast and has re all y made up for lost time. In th e t ry for top time things reall y got t ight. With three of the big b ik e riders in Pennsylvania for the National Hillcli mb things were a lit tl e bit different. Walter Humphries took his 800 Triumph fo r a near perfect ru n in the 15 00 class and set a' 6.44 second t im e of his first try only to see Will Alford h eat him . Afte r an almost unbelievab le rid e on a 360 Bul in the Exhibition class the clock r ead 6.39 seconds. On his next two t ries Walter had trouble and even t hough he made it ov er his times we re not good enough to beat Will. • Kitterman leops Kup! Twenty-one Senior Novices and 28 Novices competed for th e first place Cups and T ex as state sh aped plaques for second t hrough sixth . The st artin g tim e was later than for a usual trials, to allow everyone plenty of travel t ime. The riders found a good var iety of terrain in Saturday ' s ten se ct ions, just ab out everything excep t mud which is a rare co m modi ty in T exas . this t im e of y ear. Most of th e sections had multiple lin es th rough t hem, especially Saturday. Su nday's sections were tougher to separate everyone a lit tle. The event was st art ed (I earlier on Sunday so that everyone could ge t back on th e road home early, the parking 'ar ea was clear by 3 p.m . Out of four t ies in all of both class es , all were broken with the number of cleans except .fo r one. Bill Curts and Gene Fo rd (O klah om a) tied exactly for eighth place ! No run-o ff was held b ecause only six places were aw ar d ed. An exact tie wi th tw o-digit scores a re rar e, firs t one I've see n . The he at wasn 't as bad as ex pect ed. Earlier in the week the temps had reached 100 in this are a. There were three loops each day which didn't seem too b ad on anyone as the loop each day was sho rt . Everyone had a good time and r eally enjoyed this Trials. The N.T.T.A. sponsored this event as a premier Novice only two-day, being there wasn't a class for Novices in this year's State Ch am p io n sh ip. TX 75211 !,Jig " 0 " Cycle By Greg Labbe A USTIN , TEX., SEPT. 3 ~ Maybe it was the rain, or maybe it was kn owing th at Steve Stackable would no t be here to pu t on a spectacular sh ow like he did last we ek . Whatever the reason, a somewhat sparse turnout of about 75 riders braved slightly muddy co ndit ions to frolic under the lights. On e thin g is for sure, Fran k Tello and Bryan Taylor didn't need a large supporting cast in order to have a race. In the first mini mota Bryan Taylor moved up aft er a poor start, caugh t a flying Tello with two laps to go and after a sizzling duel got by for the first mota win . In the second mota Taylor took too long to break free fro m the pack as the ve teran Tello put too m uch distance between them and cruised home to the second mota victory and the overal l win. J a im Edgar m ade a 4-2 score wo rk fo r the overall as the 125 Novices fell all over themselves in the mud. J ames Woodmanse wa s second overall a nd Russe ll Chapman was third . David Fredricks was unbeat abl e to t he first tu m on his 25 0 Ya maha but Mark Nardin was unb eat able t o the checkered flag, getting his Husky by Fredricks in both motos of the 250 Novice class. The 125 and 250 In termediat es were combined, and raced against each other for the prid e of their re spective class . Jerry Kamp , recently moved up fr o m the Novice ranks, sh owed 125 s and 250s alike the tail end of his 125 Honda. 250 Honda mounted Wayne Eskew tried chasing Kamp, b ut had more problems holding off the screamin g 125s of Russell Po wers and Barry Briggs than he knew what to do with, so he settled for second. Mike AU sp en t about three weeks in the Expert cIass then dro pped back down and creamed t he Open Intermediates . He f inished a good half a lap ahead o f each m o ta , t he closest rid er being Robin Wilt o n a Husky. The u su al heavy duty talent d idn 't sh ow tonight in th e Ex pert classes, (Experts don't lik e to get their bikes dirty) but Mitch Mitchell made one of his in fr equen t appearances and blew everyone in the w eeds . T her e was a lo t of crashing going o n so Randy Ku h n and Mike Bodenhamer had to wo rk har d for second an d th ird in the first mo ta . Chuck Loftin placed fourt h in mota one on a 360 Husky and took third in the second mo ta on a Woods Honda 125 Elsi nore , so he was ineligible fo r overall cash. Randy Kuhn end ed up second overall with two sec o nd s, Mike Bodenhamer was third overall and Richard Mosier was fourth. • C Il CART ERS YAMAHA ~ ~ ~ BMW Can -Am Comp le t e pa rt s & se rvi ce Dyno - ~ Po r ti n g - M ac h i n e Sh op F as t M ail O rde r 214-241 -9135 ~ ~ 1 3 8 6 0 N.
