Th at's what Mark Wheeless said tw o days before the race as he men tally pre pared himself to go for it. And that 's precisely what he did this past Sunday at Austin Motocross Park's second Grand National Championship qualifier. No one co uld even come close to matching th e blazing, ber ser ka pace of Wheeless in th e 250 Expert class, d espite a lineup of heavy talent. Roger Brown fini shed about 20 seconds do wn fro m l\lar k in the first mota, and David Daniels was abou t t h e same distance back in second at the e nd o f mota tw o . It wasn ' t from lack o f trying that gift e d rid ers co uld not hold Wheeless' p ace. They tried hard, but Mark attacked each tum and straight with vengeance, hurtling h is 250 Penton through turns, over hills and ricocheting off berms, looking very much like a crash looking for a pl ace to happen. David Daniels, fro m New Braunfels, was out on- something other than a 12 5cc mach ine for tlie first time, a new 250 Can-Am whi ch he took to secon d overall. The 125 Experts kept everyone o n their feet with the closest combat of the da y. Danny Weir, fro m Big Spring, triumphed on a Honda in both motos, but had to come from fourth at the start each time to scratch and claw his the fro n t. He was followed home b y Cliff Simpson , who re fu sed to fold up in the second. The 250 No vices were absolute models of inconsist ency. All, that is, except for Husky mounted Mark Nar din who won the war without winning o ne battle. Scott Bloedorn won mota o ne but ended up fourth overall and Mark Chlapek won the second mota, but had already blown it in the fir st go aro u nd, so he received secon d o ver all.
