"We don't have the funds for such a program ;" "We don't have a qualified inst ru ct or;" " St ud ents and parents have not exp ressed a desire for such a program." As with all road legislat ion, it is public demand t hat will cau se thin gs to ch an ge. We feel sure ther e ar e you ng people o ut there. who want such a safe ty program and that there must be a school out there willing, with o ur help, t o get the program st arted. GARY R AYNER Manager, Custom City Yamaha They 're being sorta straight with you, Gary ; they honestly don't have mo neyor qualified help. Th e resp onsibilit y for. that lies with the school boards who make the day-to-day spending decisions and the state legislature that provides the money - elected officials all. For exa mple, Assembly man Carte r 's A B 1809, which would have funded such programs, got sh ot down. To change things, we're all in fo r a long pu ll, buttonholing and lob by ing these politicos at both loca l and state levels. Meanw h ile, you teeners and parents o ut the re wh o want this kind of help , you've got friends in Ya maha and in d ealers lik e Gary. Get in touch and get to get h er . . . Ed. I took one long look at Kent Howerton riding the tricycle I gave him for his fifth b irthday and I t urned to his fa t h er and said , " One of t hese days that boy will be 500cc Na tion al Mo t ocross Champion. " I still have one of his old handlebar grips to prove it. Congratulations not only to Kent but to y ou r excellent pu blicat ion as well. The photos of the final 500 National in New Orleans prove that Jody Weisel does m or e than sit on his butt and swill beer at the races he covers. That shot of "Gassin' Gay lon " Mosi er knocked my so cks off. I fee l lu c ky as hell being able to watch and compete agai nst rid er s like Kent, Steve St acka ble, Steve Wise, Wyman Priddy and others on their ho m e t racks here in T exas. I realize that not everyone is as fo rtunate. For these people, " Cy cle News" is the n ext be st thing to being there. "SMOKE Y JO E" MILIAN Aus ti n, Tex. Director's chair?
