00 C\l l-o CIJ ..c S s 0.. · CIJ en DISTRICT 3 7 ORA CHALLENGE RACE! SATURDAY OCT. 9 PO INT TO POINT LIME D FROM PA RKE R. AR IZONA .Vacation on the Colorado River A tun packed _ . .kend o. r.cllllll - PlusSwirnrninq " Ski inq " Fishing Dancinq " or What-Have-You most o f the h o t sh oes b u rned, but fortunately for them no check was waiting. T he middle o f th e loop was fairly easy until th e course again turned b ack in to t he h ills for th e las t check and the rac e fo r t h e ·ho m e check in fr ee t erritory. . Ribbon was a little sparse for the last co uple of miles as the marking crew broke down (t h e bikes not th e riders) . A nice finish er pin awaited all who completed th e cou rse. Mo st seem ed to enjo y the ride . • Re sults will be alo n g in a week or so . Huntington Beach Me Wild Hare scrambles By Terry Rezek CAMP ROCK RD ., CAL, SEPT. 12 Wet and wild! The de sert racers' erotic fantasy - wet sand! And th e biggest bunny in the desert. Two days o f rain resulted in th at rarest of desert pheonmena - no dus t. Combined that with a fast , well-marked course and baby, y ou've got fun. Not wanting to make it too easy for the riders to catch the wild hare (al tho ugh why anyone would want to catch a bu nny that size is beyond m e) HBMC started the co urse with a four-mile sandwash, wherein lurked the giant bike-eating whoop-de-does. I know , they ate mine. At least with no dust, you could see them a questionable blessing for sure. No big u p hill s, no big downhills, even the usual chop was fast. The only hazards were encountered if you strayed from th e course a n d discovered that the dry lakes weren 't. Those who made this dis covery would need a h elicopter to extract their bike s now, o r d ynamite when the mud dried. The Bunglers and Land Manglers stuc k their bu reau crat ic fin gers in the desert mud an d declared it unsafe for ride rs. T hey wan ted to p ull H BMC' s permit as late as Frida y becau se th ey (the BLM) didn 't wan t to be responsibl e for all th ose riders getting stu ck in th e desert. The qu estion is - sinc e when in the history of the d esert, has the BLM been responsible for a ny th ing? So me l eary ne got iations an d Sat urday morning co urse re -routing b y HBM C all owed the rac e t o go o n as sched uled. The cl u b sends m any th anks to th os e people wh o co-op era ted and m o ved their camps across t he ro ad . T he BLM decided o ne sid e of the ro ad was o ff-lim its. Two m ont h s of heavy d u ty scrou n gin g a n d pleading by HB MC resulted in al most S10 ,O OO worth of contingencies o f every variety . Every finish er got somethin g neat at th e line , and there 's more t o be given out at the trophy presentation. With all this go ing on, th e ra ce was al most incidental, almost, but not quit e . With no dust and a super co urse, the racers went bananas. Bruce Ogilvie slipped in to th e lead on the backs id e of t h e first loop , bu t had a humo ngous crash before home check, letting Cordis Brooks grab the lead which h e held to th e finish , Dan Dawson came in third o verall and 1I1"st Open Expert. First around the course , however, was team Husqvarna in their official ca n ti leve r magnesium airplane. Since t he HBMC didn't have an y co n ti nge ncies for first airplane, maybe Mitch Mayes nd Larry Roeseler will be on their bikes the next time out. With almost 20 classes and divisions, it is impossible to report on all th e action, especially from the bottom of a sandwash. With the help of so m e dedicated HBMC women, th e results were tabulated an d ap p ear this week. To anyone who stayed away because o f th e ra in, you don 't deserve to be called a desert racer. Man y thanks t o all th e participating cl u bs for lea ving th e d esert su per clean. • Results in Results Section. 150 Checker Miles Limited Entry Entries close October 1st NEW COURSE - LESS DUST - NO HOOPS AMA - DIST. 37 - MAIl.
