The largest class of the day was the 125 Beginners. After two motos, Forrest Hayashi and Danny Keys had exchanged first and second place positions, tieing for the lead. Mud was flying as the top two set a WFO pace for most of the first lap. Forrest got into trouble early when he tried to make a new line through some deep mud. As a result, his bike was stuck long enough to lose two positions. Misfortune struck again , in almost the same spot, when Forrest's Honda slid out from under him, pinning his leg under t he bike and en ding all chances of passing the now distant Keys. Danny too k the moto win to cash in on first overall. Forrest and Richard Metcalf were second and third. OTHG member Richard Picton won the first moto of the Junior Ve teran s class, but not until two riders in front of him went down. Ed Michetti was running second o ff the start but got buried in mud on the first tum and lost a lap. Billy " Bar kfeat h er " Burkhart led almost the entire race, but had to drop his Yamaha to avoid a downed rider. From the second moto on , the race was all Barkfeather and Suzuki-mounted Asker Lamkjaer. After a fantastic co me from b eh ind ride, Bill closed the gap between Asker and himself to abou t two bike lengths at race end. Burkhart had to win th e finale to even dream abou t winnin g a trophy, and he did, leadin g all but one lap. Problem was th at A sker and Richard took se con d and th ird behind him. Now, if that wasn't enough to fill y o ur gizzard full of joy and happiness, there is always Jeff Foland, Marty Moates, and Bobby Jones right there to help co rr ect y o ur calorie intake. Since there was nothing left of the Carlsbad GP track due to the rain , except for a Soup-er Bowl, the CMC officials altered the course layout. J df Foland (KT M) almost " o wns" the big bore class, as he won the money outright, easily powering away from his competitors. Marty Moates couldn't keep up with the S.D . Flash , so he opted to give his all in the 250 Pros. Suzuki's John Smith gave Moates a close run for .the money, as both ran inches apart throughout the two motos. Smith made many bids to get around the Miller Mano speedster in the opening round, but it wasn't until the second moto that he had a chance to catch Moates. Mike Bell showed up aboard a DC Suzuki; lookin!i"'extremely fast and smooth (as usual) , but not quite quick enough to outdo the leaders. Moates and Smith nearly lapped the en tire field, adding fourth place running Gary Jones (Am m ) as their last victim. Moto two saw a pumped-to-win Smith wail out of the gate, unleashing a hot-to-trot pace. Moates closed in on Smith and passed the CRT rider soon afterward s. Smith regained the lead for a brief moment, but Moates cleared his .mu d-clogged brake pedal to charge ba ck and cinch the win. The 125 Pro bash wasn't exactl y that ; but it was close.
