"= NORTHERN DATEUNE ~ -~ Medford's Bruce Smylie won 100cc honors as well as the same high-point award from Medford Speedway last Friday. Jeff Cook was tlie top winner in the I 25cc class. Coo k IS from Grant's Pass and sponsored by Grants Pass Suzuki and Bultaco. The 200cc high-point . award went home to Central Point with Harold Hurd and from Arcata, California, Ray Dugan was winner of the 250cc class. Richter again ran away with both motos of the 250 Expert clash but Dennis Brand (Suz) and Kipp Classen (KTM) had a good dice in each half with . Brand getting second in the first mota and 'Classen working his way through the pack and taking over second from Brand in the closing couple of laps of the second moto. Kelly Hardman (Ho n ) was charging in the first evenI of the 125 Experts, but crashed while trying to take over first from Don Cantaloupi (Yam ) who went on to win. Jeff Watts (Hus) went wire to wire in mota two but Jim Lesniewski (Hu s) was putting in a good ride for second when he suffered bike trouble and had to drop out. • Results in Results Section. Keith Cometta (Han) took the big money in the 125 Semi-pro race with two firsts. In both motos he had some hot racers breathing fire on his back. In the first round, Laine West (Hon) pushed hard, until West went down and Don Ferraro (Han) was right there. Don too k over the lead for a couple laps before a fall reversed the positions again. Meanwhile AI Hall (Hon) had been moving up and had just taken over third. This order, Cometta, Ferraro and Hall was maintained closely for the rest of the rac e. Mike Hersman on a J&K Cycle Inn Husky put on a show in the 250 Expert class, moving from the back of the pack to the winning position by taking advantage o f the long straightaway to gather speed for the jump, where h e literall y n ew past the other riders lap after lap. In the last lap his in-night passing look him oUI ahead of Pat Wilson (Hus) who had led most of the . race . T he second time out Ron Junkert (Suz) l ook the lead, but it was a fight from the very beginning. Wilson was hOI on h is heels, with Hersman right behind him. Hersman took a spill an d a DNF. Junkert and Wilson played swapsies for a few laps , taking turns leading until all of a sudden Ken Sisler [Ma i] roared by both of them and led the rest of the ra ce for the win . Wilson ended up with second again and T o m Denton (Yam) came around Junkert to take third. Wilson's two second finishes gave him first ov erall cash. Ted Rogers, newly sponsored by Husky West, took over in t he Open Expert clas s wit h two way out wins. Closest competition was in the first few laps of the first moto while Dan Leet (Mai) was chasing him. Leet went down for a DN F and Rogers built a fantastic lead over Dave My then (KTM) who finished second. Robert Norton (Hus) was back further for third. Rogers again got out front in the second mota and built a good lead. Norton went down and My then took second. Then it was My then's turn to fall and Norton was back in second with first place Rogers out of sight. • Oregon State Championships By Lyn ne. Diltz SUNNY VALLEY. ORE., AUG. 29 Sunny Valley Speedway's 15th Annu al Oregon .State Mot orcycle Championships had fewer riders th an the past 14 years but spectators agreed that there were some o f the best races they've seen . Race after rac e was decided within a few feet of the checkered nag-" . The high-point Mini Award went to little Drew Roberts from Crescent City, California, who recently qualified for a Mini National event at San Antonio. Texas. sen ces. The Handicap fracas got going with low yardage men hanging o n for wins an d hi gh yardage riders jamming fo r. transfers. When t he Main filled up it was Lindwall and Salyers going in as favorites against a hard driving Mark Tracy, Jeff Peltier, and Frank Butler. Rounding out the field was Lompoc's Brian Bishop who had a Handicap sweep. going for him. Jack Martin had problems that kept him out of the Main, but he took the Consi. The Main. was a six man dogfight from gate to flag. Bishop continued his winning ways by moving up early and staying there. Tracy blasted through . from the twenty but not in time to catch the smooth riding Bishop, Salyers and Lindwall settled for third and fourth. The Hanford fans, famous for their "bucks up" match races, wanted to see newcomers Mark Tracy and Bob McClain in a two-lapper winner-take-all match. They got their moncy's worth. Two false starts finally turned them both loose and it was man on man with Tracy firially finding some extra drive on the last lap. Bot h finished the match with w heel stand straightaway runs and th e fa ns loved it! The Scratch feature had Fresno's Mark T racy, who is becoming m ore an d more of a threat. -T he first turn hassle found Salyers and Tracy jerking away fro m Koe mans and Martin. A very p er sist en t Tracy was actually trying to get under Salyers lap after lap. Houser BRENTWOOD, CAL., AUG . 27,29 Friday night was full of excitement, with John Dossey taking the 125 Intermediate class on his Honda and also winning the Trophy Dash . He was rewarded with a ' kiss along with the big trophy fro m pretty Cindy Meyn. Vets and Old Timers lined up together to give the spectators a real show - a back and forth duel between Jack Lewis and Bob Collins. On the.last lap, Bob Collins showed his true riding ability and squared the corner to take the checkered nag by inches.. Sunday, Dick Mann, riding his 500cc Yamaha, took th e win in the Open Expert class, while Bob Myers showed up to take a first in the 250 Expert. • Results in Results Section.
