The track was soo n turned in to a slippery, soggy mi re. Only th e very b ravest dared attem pt the chal lenge o f the soupi est track sin ce last Novembe r Track Man ager Ken Vanassche was fo rced to cu t the mo tos short, no t o nly out of concern for rid er safety but also for the sake of their engin es ; to say noth ing o f t he eyestrain suffered by lapcheckers as they tried to identify the riders who were quick ly converted into look-alikes, mud-col ored fro m the t op of their helmets t o th e soles of their boots, rendering number plates us eles s. Proving himself to be a real mudder , Gary Carter (Bu l) go t the holeshot in the Open A Main and went on to a win after a second pl ace finish in th e first mota . The winner of th e first mota, 15 year old Mar k Hopkins (M-V) wound up seco nd overall. After n earl y a year of racing in Europe, Seattle's Tim Sullivan returned to the local motocross scene to slip and slide his Maico to a 250A class fir st. Taking 250A secon d pl ace honors it was 'again that hard-chargin' Mark Hopkins (Y am ) who rides two classes. _ Wiping the mud fro m his face as he took the chec kered flag, Duane Bow en (H a n ) claimed th e winner's share of th e money for th e 125 A class, followed by KTM-mounte d Brian Sessions. With his , Au ro ra Cy-cle RM 12 5 Suzu ki throwing up a rooster t ail of mud, Ch ris Gray dominated the 125B class, wi nning bo t h the fir st elimination ra ce and the mo ta . After round one each man had a ride apiece to sort out gearing and tire pressures. By th e halfway point things were getting pretty hairy. Max Koernans and Grant Sal ye rs both had perfect scores up to that point followed by Mark Tracy and J ack Martin onl y on e point away .
