Norcal night MX By Steve Castillo FREMONT, CAL., AUG. 19 After heavy rains from several days before Fremont raceway was at the peak of perfection. Several haybales mixed with the m oist dirt blended together to fonn some of the most tacky surface imaginable. The traction along with the usual race fever made for an action packed 250 Pro race with Kipp Classen (KTM), Phil Crane (Suz ) and Phil Douglas (Hus) providing the fireworks , Things started flying in the first round when Phil Crane pulled one of his spectacular holeshots, Back further in th e pack was Kipp Classen who had suffered a mediocre start. Spectators gasped as Classen made his way through groups of riders in daring swoops. Passing the Bob Tetwilliger/Paul Sipes combo (secon d /th ird ) Classen set out after the now streaking Crane, bu t rim ou t of time. Round two was Bill J ohnson's tum to ge t out front , with Kipp Classen right behind and Phil Cran e th ird. A spectator ran in front of J ohnson, causing him to get on the brakes hard thus losing it in a slippery turn. Classen was there to take adva ntage and inherited the lead . From then on it was a Classen/Crane con fron tati on all th e way to the flag. Classen held his lead though and finished first with Crane less than a second behind. Overall it was Classen, Crane and Phil Dougals. 26 '. Wes motos Wilson looked Elrod co~inated both 500 Pro and won convincingly. Dick on a Champion Cycle CZ really good tonight as he put his 3·2 score together to pick up a second over.all. • Hard to beat Hersman By Sallee Hilto n . SUNNYVALE, CAL., AUG. 22 Mike Hersman, 16 year old Husky rider fro m San Pablo, is setting a new cost of livin g standard at Northern California MX tracks. Sponsor, J &K Cycle Inn of Richmond gets its money's worth out of Mike, as he's the one to beat. In ' the rust 250 Expert moto at the Sunnyvale PAL track, Hersman got the . holeshot and spent the rest of the race maintaining a healthy lead that was never seriously ch allen ged. Second place changed several times with John Sullivan (Hus) holding the position for the first six laps be for e bike failure slowed him to ninth. Mark Hilton (Suz ) moved into second for three laps before tir e failure slowed him down, but not too badly, as he still managed a third at the finish, The final contender for second, and the one to have it when it counted was Rick Long (C-A) who had come up from the rear of the pack. Hersman had to work a little harder in the second moto, when it was his tum to have a bad start. Chris Grewer (Hus) held the lead for the six laps it took Hersman to catch up to him and take over, then the two of them spent several laps dicing it out before the checkered flag gave the win to Hersman and the second to Grewer, who had a sixth the first time around. Hilton, with his tire fixed, ran third for most of the race; but in the last lap was' victim of a badly
