In the 25 0/Open Beginner race, J oh n Basso (250 Yam) won with a substantial lead, followed by Rick Vaughn (250 Yam) . Frank Arciero Jr., (40 0 KTM) won the Open class, while Ray Bonham (500 Yam) led a group of Senior class riders • that finished nearly in each other's laps. _ Mike Sitton won the 0-200 Beginner class, with Shane Gray (125 Yam) finishing second. Susan Goade (175 Pen) wo n the Beginner Powder Puff class. Donnie Morrison (Yam) won th e Mini class, first battling Kelly Kline Yam ), then falling, then catching Kline who fell ~n her last loop) and winning. The first loop of the race was ten miles of fun, both fast and slow. The second loop, nine miles, was als o fast and slow, but rough enough so that many riders thought it was longer. The second loop was run 3-4 tim es, depending on class. Rain clouds gathered ro un d du ring th e aft ernoons, and wh ile it hailed in California City, the dusty d esert ride rs • were gran te d only a few drops. That" was Open class winner Mitch Mayes' summary of course conditions after nine laps o f the gru eling six mile GP course. He went on to say that the course was so demanding that he had to "hang on all the way !" If you weren't grinding up a gnarly uphill you were WFO on the hoop-de-dooed downhills. Of course, all this came about after 500 riders had stomped and torn-up the course before Mitch's race - the last one on Sunday. The Novice riders on Saturday.had a smooth mellow trailride compared to the d ilapidated course the Experts inherited on Sunday. Had it not been for the gawd-awful hard work by the Invaders, things would have been a whole lot worse 4. Yamaha, Kawasaki. and Suzuki. Saturday The morning sun edged it s way over the horizon and into the deep blue' sky after the voracious thunder storms Friday. All the Novices were ru n in fo ur races, each lasting an hour and a half. To everyone's surprise, t he little bores were ma king better lap times than the biggies (the 125 winner shaved three minutes off the Open Novice winner's time). Of course, since the little bikes ran first, they had the best course conditions; 0-100 Novices: The first race of the day (along with all the other races) . started right on the minute. Front row starter Ray Guilbeau (Yam) led the pack around the first loop. Hot on his , ta il was Desert Knight Frank Thomas (Yam) ' who too k over the lea d on the second lap and held it to the finish, Guilbeau finished a distant second with Stirling Hopson (Hod) in for third. The first Mini across the line was Honda mounted Mike Campeau. It's interesting to not that Mike's lap time was equal to the lap times of the Open Novice winner. 176-250 Novices: Edwin Cossak nailed the first turn in the number one position, but he came unwired and drop p ed b ack as J oh n Mittendorf (Suz) took over the lead. Way back in fifth after t he first lap was eventual winner To m Watson (Hus) Watson gra dually inched his --:ay up , lap after lap , until th e sevent h whe n he too k over the lead fro m Mittendo rf, Paul Valente (Hus) fought his way from 20th to capture third at the finish. Coming in aways back was Beginner class wi nner 'Sco t Duncan, on a Suzuki. 251 -0pen Novice: Fifth p lace finisher Warre n Goodman led it in the early part of the race only to get zap ped by . eventual winner Keith Smith (Yam) .
