._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._. Allison fared much better in the Open Expert Short Track where he showed Chuck Petty the way things are done . The Open Amateur race went down to the wire on both the short track and h al f-m ile. In the short track Fred Conover got off on top with Dick Lewis and Jim Roach running two, three. On lap three Fred's bike quit coming out of tum two and Roach was up front. Meanwhile , Cary Tanner had been working his way through the field and passed teammate John Karns to take over second. On the last lap Cary made his move, go t by Roach, to o k the checkered, and Jim settled for second. On the half-mile, Dave Peters still rem ains the guy to beat as he led Fred Con over and Jim Roach from start to finish, Mark Shelton showed the Novices ho w it was done and on the half- mile ' J ac k Au sm us claimed the victo ry as at tr itio n problems sturck d own Roge r " G" and Scott Lon gnecke r. _Mike Ti dwell has re turned to th e ring, even th o ugh his cast is still on. St epp ing wi th much cautio n, he perfe cted the style of feet up riding th rough corners in th e 25 0 Expert Short Track and Half Mile. In the sho rt track he could on ly hold it for two laps be fore J eff Springman got by an d went on to win. On th e half-mile Mike he ld on to the lead until the last lap. On ly then was J eff able to get the chance to make his pass an d get the win . The 250 Amateurs shared the wealth with Rob Selvy topping Ron Arlt 'and David DeTemple. Ron took the n od on the half-mile, holding off Davi d and Rob. David is going into the hospital for surgery on his leg and will no t be able to ride for several months. All the riders wish him well . Chris Choisser won both the 250 Novice Short Track and Half Mile along with a transfer to Amateur . Kirk Johnson claimed three wins for his evening's work; the Div. I Mini Sh o rt Tr ack, and bot h the short track an d half-mi le 125 Amateur goes. • Results in Re sults Section. 0-38/0-37 MX CA RLSBA D, CAL ., AUG. 15 Three time 0 ·38 25 0 num ber one, Mike Steam s, took his factory sponsored Husqvama to a grandslam victory in 250 Expert action. 125 and Open Experts Rodney Brand an d Chuck Pettigrew of 0 -37 were equally dominate in their respective classes. S teams exploded out of the gate in the first moto and pulled into a commanding lead while Jeff Mathews (Kaw) extended his hold on second. Mike Mcgowen grabbed third as he charged from a dead last start. Joe Holt scored the holeshot in the first moto of the screamer division but Rodney Brand (Hon) wasn't content to remain in third, and powered his Honda in to the lead on the long Car lsbad uphilL Butch Darling (Ho n ) was also on the move, dispatching George Speck for fourth, zapping Holt for third, and fo und himself in second o n lap five. Greg Meyers (Hon) closed on Holt at the half-way point, then passed Darling fo r second a few laps from the flag . At the finish it was Brand, Meyers, Darling and Holt. Chuck Pettigrew put his Wheelsmith Maico out in front of the firs t Open moto . Ken Frost (Suz), Rob Norgaard (CZ), an d Mik e Mcgowen (Hus ) gave chase. Norgaard nailed Frost for second on lap one , but bobbled on lap three allowing Fro st and Mcgowen to slip by. Mcgowen really pressu red Frost, who responded by crashing as he exited the tum at the top of the uphill. Pettigrew we nt on to win, Mcgowen was second an d Lars Larsen brought his KTM in fo r third. Steams holeshot the second 25 0 moto again, with Mathews grabbing a safe second. Welker was third on a Suzuki. The front three p ositions remained unchaged right up to the flag. Rodney Brand smoked everyone off the line in the final 125 go, Darling, Speck and Holt filled in behind. The last Open moto provided some excitement as Ken Frost (wi th a new set of handlebars after his first moto get off) directed the way around the first tum as Pettigrew and Mcgowen breathed down his neck. After playing freight train for three laps, Mcgowen went berserk as he passed Frost for the lead on the uphill in a series of tank slappers. Pettigrew eventually passed the squirelly Husky rider for good and pulled away. Mcgowen slo wed to a sane pace, after almost killing himself, and rode in for another second. Bob blew away the entire field in the first mo to. However, in the fi al, Gary n man aged to stay within a few seconds of Brammer u n t il late in the race. Bob apparently thought that Peterson was m uch further behind than he was, because he backed completely off the throttle, coasting toward the fmish line. Gary came bursting over the line WFO , inches ahead of a surprised Bramm er. They finished in that order in the overall standings. Gary . Scheidler and Greg Stone both piloted Yamahas to grandslam wins in the 125 and 250 Expert classes. Going into the final Mini Novice race, Tony Barbacovi and Joe Morris found themselves tied for the overall le ad at three p oin t s a p iece. Tony had suffered a ru bber bum acro ss his nec k when the ru bber start band sna ppe d loose as he was crossing the track betw een h is second and th ird m o te s, With a shot at the win, To ny went for it and le d the first five laps of the race. Finally, the pain became too much. AUG. 14 Hailey in the classes. Expert class was a blanket race but Hailey 's 500 Yamaha pulled off the win. Next in line was Joe Steffen, aboard a 25 0 Yamaha as Pat Dobbins let a th ird p lace slip through his fmgers when Jeff Springman muck up to stuff his wheel under Dobbins on the last lap. The second go 'round wa s all Steffen and Hailey had to play secon d fiddle . The final mot o would be the deciding facto r be tween llailey and Steffen . Hailey shot o ut front and the only th ing that J oe saw thro ughou t t he r ace was t he 86 on Hailey's back. Ste ffen 's 250 handled a lot better on the TT course than Dobbins' 650 Triumph, and by lap two Joe was second in ho t pursuit of Hai ley. Rex had a commanding lead by now and the checkered fell with Hailey first. J oe Steffen second and Pat Dobbins third.
