------_._---------------------------_. Vidic grandslams Saddleback By Danny Ray mond IRVINE, CAL., AUG. 28 Wheelsmith's Jeff Vidic continued his 250 Pro win streak today by going to a perfect 1-1 score over Steve Rhyan (C-A) and Andy Kirker (Hus). . During Open Pro racing, once Luke Messer dropped au t with Maico problems, Steve Russell (Mai) locked up another Saturday win. Steve's hardest competition came from a hard charging Jack Hazzard (Suz). During both mo tos Jack would pull the holeshot and work into a small lead until Russell would make up the distance and finally pass for the lead. Meanwhile, Richee Collins (KTM) and John Hateley (Suz) were having a fine battle for third. Hateley came out ahead, but both Collins and Hateley failed to finish the second mota giving Steve Montaque third overall. During the 125 Pro action, T&M's Mark Tyer (Suz) ran away with the first mota by nearly a third of a lap. Tony Wanket (FMF Han) was holding down a strong second over -Lance Moorewood (Myerscough Suz) and Gregg Young. The action snapped up during the second mota. Arden Hadley showed the way around the first lap With Ty er, Wanket and Kurt Sofka in pursuit. Wanket made his move and passed both Hadley and Tyer at the same time and walked into a short lead only for his Honda to let him down for a heart breaking DNF. At the checkers it was Tyer in front; Hadley, Sofka (Q&E Yam) and Jim Gibson (Han) fmishing in the top four positions. - McDo~gal shines at Saddleback By Patti Trotter ORANGE, CAL. , AUG. 29 At 9 a.m . the fog was still hanging over the Saddleback gully but by mid-day it was hot and the 'sm og was heavy in the air. Most of the riders were showering under the water tower, bikes leathers, boots, et al. During the second round of races the track began to resemble asphalt. 125 Pro mota one had T&M rider Bruce McDougal go for position one, get it and keep it, with Jim Domann (Han) and Dave Carlson (FM F) I garnering second and third. In the second mota Carlson gO t off the line first, with Bill Taylor (Han ) and Peter Wanket ( FM F) playing follow the leader. Carlson opened up such a lead that the second and . third place riders were of little . threat. Then it happened, Dave broke . and DNF'd, Bill Taylor took the lead with McDougal smack on his tail, putting on the pressure. Taylor dropped au t of contention for first and McDougal was the man to beat. Team FMF, Wanket and Cliff Lett, had the two, three positions, with Bruce's . teammate Mark Tyer fmishing fourth . Pro payback went to McDougal, Lett, and Domann. , . Jeff Vidic (Mai) led the 2!i0 Pros at the start of an exceptionally fast race with John Smith (Nightingale Mfg.) and Val Tamietti (Mai) after him. In the third lap Vidic crashed and surrendered the lead to Smith, who was really on the gas. John had lap times of 1:23: 1. He was using a trick, super knobby Barum fro nt tire h e got from Peter Sosna and it looks like a grabber in the tight Saddleback turns. Mota two saw Smith; Vidic and Tamietti blast down the first hill and start the duel for positions. Tami worked past"Vidic and as he and Smith came out of the canyon, Tami grabbed onto first and opened up a good lead, leaving Smith and Vidic to dice it out. San Diego Suzuki's Scott Man tomgery motored in fourth. Final points went to Tamietti, John Smith and Scott Montgomery. John DerHammer (Man) went all the way to win both Open Pro races today. In the first mota, Marty Moates (Suz) and Val Tamietti (Mai) were gassin' it to catch J on. Mike Bell, on his Bill Bell built Long Beach Honda 4 stroke, got a seventh place start but worked his way up to third which had been held by Tamietti. Tami retired from the race due to carburetor problems. In the second mota Jon again got the holeshot. At lap two it was DerHammer, Moates, and Bell , but ~Ioates disappeared and Bell and the 4 stroke took over second. Jack Hazard (Suz) took third and held it for eight laps but lost it to Moates on the last go around. DerHammer, Bell and Moates picked up the cash. • Results in Results Section. One more time with CMC By Mike Yada CARLSBAD, CAL., AUG. 22 The day's racing is almost complete ~s van-loads of bikes and bodies prepare to exit the pits and return home; tired, dusty, and relaxed. Buzz Croft sits quietly among the scorekeepers, a stray dog, and CMC head honcho Kelvin Franks. After watching a few more 125 Juniors roar through the final turn, Buzz reaches out for attention - "Kelvin, what do we do when everybody turns Pro?" "Start all over." In the beginning there were green Pentons. But now, they all have been replaced by herds of red Hondas. The name Penton has been replaced with the initials KTM and J eff Foland is turning those letters into the most familiar ones in the 500 Pro class. Meanwhile, John Tessitore campaigns new DG Honda, winning the 125 Pro class in today's CMC wars. Marty Moates went home the happy winner for Miller Mana in the 250 Pro battle. . Val Tamietti ran into some hard luck; DNFs in both the 250 and 500 classes cut short his chance to clean up the winnings. Tamietti rode well ahead of the pack in the first 250 Pro go, stretching his lead over Marty Moates to a fat quarter lap. But as soon as his chain took a short trip from the sprockets, everyone moved up one notch. . Opening up the first mota was, of course, Tamietti, heading the lead trio of Steve Blackman (Bul) and Scott Montgomery (Suz). Marty Moates started off in mid-pack, and kept up his charge, which appeared au t-of-control at times, passing both Blackman and Montgomery in one big swoop and Montgomery took an ill timed spill to inspect the Carlsbad dirt. Mota two saw Wes Sutton (Mai) jump out into the lead and hold off Moates for the first half of the mota. Montgomery dialed into a rapid pace, which directed him past Sutton and . Moates into second overalL Jeff Browning, who had worked his way to second in the first mota, never showed up for the first lap of the final mota. Sutton took third overall earnings. Tamietti opened up the 500 Pro racing with a holeshot. Jeff Foland didn't take long in getting around the TNT rider, pulling well ahead of the pack. Foland flopped his bike over in the uphill comer, ' breaking the pipe mount, but - it wasn't enough for Tamietti t o pass. Dale Anderson (Suz) outrode Steve Fry (Yam) to take third in the mota . Foland dumped his clutch and flew out of the gate in the second mota well ahead of the group of big bikes. At the end of the first lap, however, it wasn't Foland out front - it was Tamietti, but he wasn't followed by Foland either. Foland's chain slipped off the sprockets, leaving Jeff to pi ck up a hard charge a Used by Team Han a, Team Suzuki, and Team Kawasaki riders in motocross, road raci ng & endures. _ Bel-Ray Chain Lube outlasts others and keeps your chain together: It waterproofs, rustproofs and lubricates wit h Molbua min, a sp ecial anti-wear additive that tri p le~ chain life.
