AUG. 27 In the third and final qualifier for . .the positions in the third . annua l CMC Night Natio n al, Gar y Denton ran aw ay from the rest of the field 18 to score a co nvi n cin g overall victory in the 125 Pro cat egory . In the openingmoto, Denton took th e lead in the first corner with Dave Carlson and Dave Pessy · battling for second. Mark Lawrence, riding the Crown Cycle Yamaha, went by Pessy on the second lap for third and was able to overtake Carlson for second. With just two laps to go, Denton looked to have to o big of an ad vantage fo r Lawrence to . make up. But Lawrence, known for his come · from -behind finishes , gre at slowly closed in on Denton on the final lap. But Denton took the win with Mark second followed by Carlson , Pessy and Eddie Clark. In the second go, Denton again grabbed the lead but this time Lawrence had gotten a much better start and was right behind Gary. As Denton and Lawrence battled for the le ad over th e "Wheelsmith Jump" , Mark came up with some type of problem and pulled o ff the track for the remainder of the mota. Denton went on to score an easy win over Carlson, Jolm Atwood, and Bob Marino. Lawrence was unable to return in the final mota and Denton flat blew the rest of the field in the weeds. Denton claimed overall honors with second going to Dave Pess y, and th ird went to Atwood. In the 250 Pro class, defending Nigh t National Champion Jeff Vidic picked up the overall victory . with first place finishes in the first and second motos and a -second in the final round. Val Tamietti took second overall with Lawrence, aboard " a Suzuki, placing third. "Big" Luke Messer claimed another overall win in the 500cc Pro cl ass after m ota wins in the first and t h ird rounds. Sec ond went to Jim Harris, riding a Yamaha, and third to Suzuki-mounted J=Mill= Resul ts in Results Section.
