Harper ran away from the field in both motos, leaving Dean Taylor, Tom Baugh and Richard Bland to figh t it out for th e number two spot. Baugh finished second overall at 2-3, while Bland and Taylor took third and fourth. Rodney Morrison was the grand-slam winner of the 125 Experts but the win could have very easily gone to Evan Marcus. Evan led the entire first mota but he pulled off the track with one lap left in the race, mistaking the white flag for the che ck ered. He got back on, but not before Morr ison had gone by. The second mota saw Rodney jump to a big advantage, onl y to witness Marcus rapidly closing th e gap. By th e last lap , e van was about three seconds behind Morrison, bu t failed to make any more progress, settlin g for secon d overall. Rider) Shroyer Rich (Sleazy con tin u ed his ram p age of the 250 Beginners ' by finishing 1-2 en route to th e overall win. • Resul ts in Results Section. AMC MX: Cardoza rules, Collins cools By Rex Reese EAST IRVINE, CAL ., AUG. 13 Riclt Collins (KT M) looked like he had it m ade by ta king the first tw o motos in the Op en Pro class. The first was easy as Rich took it over Clint Bartee (Mai) and John Cardoza (Suz ). The second mota was a b it more di fficult. Rich , Clint and John were flying in tight formation for most of the seven lap mota until the KTM rider worked up enough o f a lead to do the deed. Collins' h andlebars turned to poison in the final round, collapsing on him, wh ich retired Rich from action, killin g an otherwise good night of riding. Cardoza won the mota and first overall, whil e Bartee placed a consistent second. Collins' DN F and two wins demoted him to third. Tom Cross (Suz) do minated all three 250 Pro starts easil y. Gre g Barrett (Suz ), who rode second in the first two motos, got kicked back to th ird in the last by Pat Nash (Yam). Nash's third mota second made up for a second moto DMF to give him third, while Gregg's 2-2-3 was good for second overall. Got that ? Rich Marion smoked the 250 Beginners twice on his GP Hus ky and probably would've taken mota three if he hadn't got ten a bad start which put him in th e rear guard position of the pack. Ric k....looked as if he was stroking it an appeared to be taking his time in picking off his quarry. He passed Jamie Brodie (CZ), put the attack on leader Joe Almeida (Suz) , and set up for the IIHow Hodaka helped IDe lose 690 cc's (. . . and find th e real fun of cycli ng.") H ow? " Lik e a lot o f peopl e who get in to cycling, I went the big bike rout e for a while. . 4 Enjoyed tha t - until the novelty of beat ing , spo rts cars away from the stoplights wore ofI. Finally had to admit to myself that for me, owning a big street machine just wasn't worth the big investm ent in money and time. "Didn't know what to . do after I sold that bike. Even thought about gelling out of cycling altogeth er. "Then one day my buddy Charlie bough t himself a new Hoda ka 125 Super Combat 'dirt bike. I kidded him about getting a 125 becau se he's pretty big. But he just smiled and told me to try it out. "As soon as I sat on the bike I knew it was diff ere nt fro m ot he r lightweig h ts . It fe lt d iffer en t. Not heavy, but so lid, like a bigger bi ke . An d • when I put it in gea r and took off, I thought the factory must have put a 250 engine in it by mistake! 1 ne ver kne w how great off-road ridi ng could feelon a machine tha t reallyhandles. "Well, the next day I went out and bought my own Hodaka - a 100 Super Rat. As far as I'm conc erned, it's as close as you can get to pure fun . It's more hassle free than I figured any bike could be. And atthe prices they're selling for this month, I'd be crazy to have anything else! "And you know, I never miss those 650 cc's I lost." The Hodaka Philosophy At Hodaka. we've noticed off-road ricling has really opened up, and more people are ind uding it in the ir outdoor activities. We're glad they're discovering the fun of a sport that's bee n our favorite for 12 years . That's how long ago we set out to develop the Ultimate Trail Bikes. We set up operations in the small town of Athena, Oregon, site of the National Bad Rock 2 Day Trials and smack in the middle of every conceivable kind of off-road terra in you might run into . Cow trails. Forested mou n tains . O pen di rt roads. Ro c ky strea ms . You name it. We've put a lot of miles on Hodakas around Athena . And made a lot of des ign improvements based on what we've found out. What we've arrived at is a grou p of exce ptionally refined off-road performers that still have a ll the virtues of simplicity. Only one plug to change. No multiple ca rbs to synchronize. Part s that don' t cost a mint. And ease of maintenan ce that's designed into every bike we build. Now we'd like to introdu ce you to this mont h's very special offer on two very special Hodakas: the 100 Super Rat and the 125 Super Comba t - the High Per formance Adult Trail Bikes. The Motorcycles Don't let the racy good looks fool you. Th ese a ren't tweaky, high-strung mounts designed to go like hell for an hour and then be tom down and rebuilt. What they are is a happy combine tion of race-bred performance and handling plus traditional Hoda ka reliability - all tucked into tall, tough , man -sized frames that are more reminiscent of a 2SO than the loo' s and 125's you're used to seeing. The Performance From the minute you first sit on o ne of these mac hines and snap the throttle open, you'll know these are no o rdinary lightwe igh ts. Th e excl usive Hodak a Alumiferri c e ngine has amazingly quick response and gutsy performance over a wide RPM range. And it's . coupled to a 5 speed gear box that lets you pick your ratio for any kind of terrain and any kind of riding. . But don 't ta ke our wo rd for it. Check the record Hodaka has piled up in compet ition. Not only have Hodakas won hundreds of nat ional and international events , but the same basic engine and frame have won all k inds of events. Mo toc ro sses . S crambles . Hill climbs . Trials. Even road races! Like we said, not ordinary light. weight motorcycles . The Reliability In November of 1972, big six foot, six inch Frank Wheeler rode a Hodaka 125 all the way around Australia - 10,000 miles - in 21 days! Man, mach ine, and 200 pounds of gear averaged an incredible 475 miles a day over the rugged terrain. That's 2 or 3 yea rs ofaverage use squeezed into 3 week s! Not the so rt of punishmen t most light bikes take kindly to. But then, most bikes aren't built like Hodakas. ·The e xtra quality that starts in our advanced power train carries right through to every detail of the Super Rat and Super Combat. Take the rear suspension, for instance. Its light alloy shocks have cooling fins to prevent fade when you're loaded down and in a hurry. Full knobby tires are standard, too . So a re super-strong alloy rims that are - light in weight to get you over obs tacles eas ily. And don't forget the folding, enduro style foo tpegs. A braced chain guard . Unbreakable plastic fende rs fron t a nd rear, with front mud naps . A responsive progressive-act ion throttle that comes on smoot hly from idle to full bore . Irnproved brake linings . And lots more . Something Special -On Spe c ial We hope you've gotten the picture that the Super Rat and S uper Combat are very spec ial mach ines. Now get hip to the other halfof the sto ry - the price . Beca use for a limited time, these high per formance trailers a re on sale at prices you11have to look twice to believe - just $519 suggested retail for the Super Rat and $549 suggeste d retail for the Su per Comba t! (West Coast P.OE)" If you've been considering a 250 dirt bike, you know a good one will cost you around twice these prices and possibly a lot more. Think about that for a while: two great bikes for the price of one. Then think abo ut the things you can do with two bikes that you can't do with one. Because if one Hoda ka is a great inves tment in fun, two Hodak as can compound the rewards! But hurry - this sale can only last until current inventories a re gone. A Hodaka exclusive: the Alumiferric Cylinder Bef ore Ho d a ka , th e best bike engines usually had cylinders that were made in two pieces : an aluminum outside with a cast iron slee ve slipped into it. The a luminum was great for light weight and fast hea t dissipation, but didn't wear well. so ihe cast iron cylinder liner was added for durability. The problem is, the iron sleeve has to have "windows" cut in it for the port ope nings . And . with norma l rnan u fa c turing tolerances, these windows often don't line up perfec tly with the ports in th e a lu min u m cyli nd e r. This c reates irr e gu lari ties . Irre gu la r ities c reate turbulence. Tur bulence interferes with the smooth, lam inar gas flow tha t's essential for peak performa nce. Ho da ka 's pat ent ed Alu m ife rr ic fusion c a sting proc ess elim inates this problem. That's becau se our iron liner isn't just a slipped-in sleeve - it includes the port passages, too , so there are no irregularities to restrict now. Thealuminum exterior is then bonded onto the iron core to form a cylinder that has the advantages . of both metals - with none of the disad vantages of conventiona l engines' big pass near the start·finish line. But, ' Rick took a short trip over the high side of the last tum before the finish which made him lose his chance at the overall. As Almeida motored home for the win, Rick's mistake put him in second, Brodie was third. • Results in Results Section. Old Timers dominate Police Olympics By OT Dale Calais LIVERMORE, CAL., AUG. 12 The annual AMA sanctioned Olympics of Motocross for the Western States involving all agencies of Law Enforcement was hel d on the on e rnile-plus ru gged n atu ral terrain course at Carnegie Cycle Park. The event consisted of 125, 250 and Open class competition with three motos for each class . Bob Pawling, OT Master, George Meyer, OT Expert and Gene Fox, OT Master, attended the event. Riding Maicos in a field of 28 competitors, Bob and George completely dominated the Open class. Pawling won the event with a I-I- I , and George was right behind with a 2-2-2. Bob also competed in the 125 class , on a Suzuki, and handily won that event with a 1-1-2, holding off 18 riders. Bob is with th e Lo s An geles Police Department and Georg e is with th e Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. All o f us in th e Old .Tim ers Club join together to extend a round of applause and congratulations for their outstanding performances at th is annual event. Bob said, " I lost 10 pounds and I'll have to eat off th e mantle for awhile - my rear end got so sore - but we're having it at Saddle back next ye ar , and I'm already looking forward t o doing it again." • New CRC track at Corona By K. Ho lmes CORONA, CAL. AUG. 12 CRC has layed out an all new track and riders were introduced to several very tight corners, a couple of new jumps and a new eight foo t berm shot. The 250 Expert race featured a match-up between a motocrosser and an off-road specialist. Goat Brecker, on his Dallas Baker Kawasaki, battled with Larry Roesler, winner of the 1976 Baja International and the Parker 500, and D-37 's No. One Desert rider. Although Larry 's a factory Husky rider, he brought out his dad's stock 250. In moto one the powerful Kawasaki beat everyone into the IlTSt comer. Roesler got a bad start and gassed it into second behind Bre cker, but was unable to close th e gap. In moto two Goat again out-powered everyone to take the lead. Larry began catching up and was right on Goat's tail when he lost his chain. The crowd came alive in the third moto when Larry really put the pressure on. You could have thrown a blanket over both riders; they were side by side with both riders taking completely different lines through the comers. On the last lap Goat momentariIy stalled the big Kaw at the top of the downhill. That's all Larry needed to make the p ass and win th e mota, but when the scores were added Goat ha d en ough to take fir st place money. The Open class featured Greg Done on his Cucamonga sponsored Yamaha. He was having trouble keeping the b ig 600 in a straight line but scored enough points to beat out John Miller on his sweet Duck Suzuki. • . . ResuIu in Results Section. 25
