CAL., AUG . 22 P hilippe deLespinay came from behind to shatter the, 125 GP class, David Emde again won every race he started, and Dick Kilgroe dominated big-bore street bike racing at Ontario Motor Speedway Sunday. 26 De Lespinay, riding his home-built "Garbage Can Special" (the trickest "garbage can" we'll evef see), got o ff the st ar ting grid th ird. Jeff Steele, on a more conventional air cooled TA125 Yam aha. led, with Mike Velasco third on a Kawasaki F7 made into a GP machine. DeLespinay flew past Steele on the back straigh t, trailed by Velasco, who also passed Steele. By the third lap, deLespinay had a giant lea d, the n n the fo urth lap 'sat up on th e straightaway in fro nt of the grandstands, and waved Velasco and Steele by: Velasco c ontinued to st retch out his lead. When the last lap flag c ame out, Stee le h ad 3 00 fee t on deLesinay. Then, in a tremen d ou s bu rst com ing off T um 19 to start th e last ci rcuit, deLespinay picked up all of Ste ele 's lead , wailed p ast as th ey crossed the starting lin e, an d st retched ou t 30 0 feet on Steele.
