Dick Kilgroe. legendary road racer. won
a whole bunch of street bike races at
Ontario .
Juliussen and Hewitt often outbraked
and passed King, only to be repassed on
the straighter sections of the course.
Hewitt kept diving in on his Production
machine, passing King and J uJiussen at
Tum 19, and every other tight section
of the Ontario course. Finally King got
too much distance on the straigh t and
banking for the slower machines. King
was third in 125 GP, JuJiussen won 100
GP. and Hewitt was second in 200 GP .
David Emde led the start of 250 GP,
chased by Harry Klinzmann , Rudy
Galindo, Dick
Fuller. and Kent
Rockwell. Emde stretched it out, on his
Mark Yamaha while Galindo went after
K1inzmann. For three laps in a row,
Galindo (Hap J ones Yamaha) passed
K1inzmann (Ron Pierce Yamaha) won
the outside of Turn 18, and left-hander,
setting himself up fo r the inside on Tum
19,
th e
t igh t-b an der im mediately
following. But with K1inzmann cl ose on
his left , Galindo wa s fo rced int o a tight
entrance to T um 19. Every ti me,
K1inzmann squared off the tum an d
do ve back under Galindo as Gal indo was
forced by inertia to exit the turn wide.
Finally , Galindo crashed in T um Six
while lead in g K1inzmann . He. was unhurt
and res tarted, bu t was no t again in the
hu nt.
Riding a Mack Kambayashi Yamaha
identical to Emde's Tony Murphy kept
movin g up in the p ack, p assing Dick
Fuller (Korb's Trading Post Yam ah a) on
the last lap. Behind Fuller came
Whitney Blakeslee, Rocky Rockwell,
and Wally Karpnec in a tight group .
Emde ran away with the Op en GP on
Gene Romero's spare Don Vesco
TZ750,
never
challenged.
Rocky
Rockwell won the concurrently-run 350
GP class.
Dick Kilgroe le p t into the lea d of
Open Production on his Kawasaki Z-l,
which was no su rprise in the ab sence of
Ken Gill, Mike Parriott, and Keith Code.
But what wa s a su rprise was that John
Glover rode a Mr. Jags 850 No rton
Interstate in a strong sec ond !,lace, far
ahead of Davi d Bre et wo r (Triu mph
750), Dick Fuller (Yamaha 360 ), Emile
MuJlick (Hon da 750) , and Tom Hayner
(Yamaha 350).
According to Steve Peterman of Mr.
J ags, the Norton was painfully slow.
Indeed, it always seemed slow when
Peterman rode it . But with Glover
aboard, the bike just flew. Finally ,
ign ition wire vibrated loose , ending
Glover's ride .
Glover rode the b ike in fo ur -stroke
GP as we ll, b ut stopped and ju mped off
when the "snortin' Norton." burst in to
flam es o n th e back st ra igh t . The fire was
qu ickly put out.
Kilgro e went on to win Open 4-stroke
GP and Su per Cafe by wide margins.
