J o hn Lo cke (second ) and Eddie Swartz (fourth) arrived in California on Monday and raced at Hanford, San Bernardino, Irwindale, and San Diego before starting h om e on Saturday nigh 1. Swartz sa id there are four riders with sp eed way bikes in Houston and th ey us e them in exhibition races and play, but knows of no p lans to hold speedway races in Texas, everythin g there is motocross. Larry Kosta won the King of the Hill Match ra ce and the Scratch Main. Buffington's magneto" fa iled and kept him ou t of the races. He then borrowed a bike for his match race and left its primary drive ch ain in the first tum. Kosta will go against Robin Hood in the next match race. The Juniors had a beautiful race going in th eir mam event. Louis Kossuth, winner, starting with a ,6 0-y ar d han d icap was in fourth or fifth , without any immediate opening, when le ade r Mik e Mille r skated off the groove and fell. J De Donaldson wen t higher to go around Miller and also fell. The pack opened up and Kossuth came through to w in with Randy Bennett , and J im Richardson finishing a close second and _ third. ' Steve Leowtsky won the Handicap Main afte r a very close fin ish be tween second . place Brad Oxley and Pat Gu th rie. Oxley also ran second in the scratch main with Lewotsky third. Guthrie won the Scratch Consolation by 3 0 yards. In the Amateur cl ass Paul Web ster ( 175 Yam) took the win over his brother Mark (175 Yam) by two points. _ Oli Th ordar sen (!75 Yam) was behind in third and Duane "the sna ke " Feland (250 Suz) finished fourth. L. Cu r ti s on a 125 Honda won th e . Beginners class, dropping only 12 points. P. Chandler (Bu l 325) and Mike Stone (175 Yam) tied fo r second with 14 points a piece. Chandler ended up in second with 32 cl eans to Stone's 30. T .A. Watkin's (247 Mont) effort ended in fourth with 21 points lost. ' r T . Holcomb (25 0 Suz) broke Marty Stabile's strangle hold on the Novice class. Holcomb had fine rides all day. R. Palmer and J . Wakeland, both on 325 . Bultacos dropped 17 points each, but Palmer won the tie breaker wi th 29 cleans to Wakeland's 28. Marty Stabile (250 Yam) had an off day ending in seven th . Manfred Lauxen (350 Bul) continued to dominate the Senior class with an o th er fine ride arid another first. Art Web ster (25 0 Yam) was second Se nior. Both of these men .had great rides all day with only nine points separating them. Bob Solty (326 Bul) rode well for a third. . I.T.A. p lans to start a Senior A and Senio r B class fo r beginning Seniors, to en c ourage a lar ger than ever ' Senior Springs. In a final tune-up for the Novice race at Laguna Seca, Emde won both the 250 and 350 Grand Prix races. Wally Karpynec - was the only rider to stay within striking distance in 'the 250 race as Dave blazed the way, turning 1 :39 laps. _ Emde didn't let Willow's 100 degre e temperature distract him as he went back out to score an overall win in the 350-Open GP race on his 350 Yamaha, ahead of Ralph Hudson (500 Suz) . AMA Expert Phil McDonald (Bel-Ray Special) lost the Open GP division when he was forced t o m ake a prolonged pit stop. Jim Haberlin (Tri) passed his Mr . ' Jay's teammate, Dave Breetwor, on the second lap of the Open Production race and went on to score a ten-second victory . Meanwhile, Dave had his hands fu ll holding off the advances of Alan ' Gingerelli (RD-400) . Haberlin also won the 4-Stroke Grand Prix after early leader Lee Flemming pulled out. The tightest race of the day was in the Combined 250/350 Production class. Bill Henry (RD-350) jumped off to a quick lead, followed by Wally Karpynec (250 Suz), Tom Hayner (Yam), Chris Rank (Yam) , and Paul Kramer (Yam) . ' Late in the race Karpynec broke free of the pack and began to close on Henry. At the finish Wally was still half a bike length behind. Gary Keissel deserved the "Evel Kn ievel Award" for the day's most spectacular jump and crash after he overshot the final turn and couldn 't avo id an embankment that launched him high into the air. It was fortunate that he was unhurt since he plarmed to ride his bike back to San Jose that evening. Darrell Lee, on a 10-speed Nishiki, won the gruelling one-lap bicycle race to take the fabulous $5 purse put u p by race promoter Pat Manning. He credited his selection of a wide-ratio gear cluster to his victory over ' Bob Nolan (close-ratio).
