Scrat chers Po rk y McCabe , leadi ng Scott Black. I I I I I' I Years of months of Speedway City's Salt dreaming and nine planning brought a meet to Salt Lake Palace. Usually the home of hockey, basketball, and a great variety of quieter events, this was the first motorized even t to ap p ear in it although more arc planned. The meet was organized by Terry Nish, promoter, and Tommy Dickerson speedway rider, , friends since ch ildh o od. Most of th e riders impor ted for the meet were from California, including som e sligh tly familiar names such as Mike Bast (Saturday only), Dubb Ferrell ( Fri day only) and Jim Fishback. Originally planning to brin g in a special rock, Terry and Tommy decided the dirt left over from the rodeo the week before would do. When preparing the surface they fou nd the clay content wouldn't let the water penetrate so, dissa tisfied, in th e m id dl e of nigh t Wednesday they tore it up and regraded, then watered, dragged and ro lled some m o re . The riders couldn't agree on how to treat it. Ferre ll suggested watering du ring th e in term ission . So me though t this saved it, others thought it came apart more. California ride rs had an advan tage on this surface with their 19 " Carlisles, over the stock rear tires of the loc al riders. The altitude of over 4000 feet both ered them. The firs t Handicap he at started the meet off properly with a close duel between Dubb Ferrell and Randy Marsh, Randy was doin g go od here bu t later hi s pcr fo nnan ee fell off, as the bike had timing trouble. In the fourth Handicap ' hea t Tommy Dickerson , ttying hard, hit the w all in the second tum an d Dan Sp aithe won. Steve Schlanser dumped in the second Handicap Semi and Clin t Palmer, who was h ot tonight, won. Mike Bendy did a 36 0 o n th e tum. Guys ru shed out to catch him, b t he recovered and u co n tinued, Palm er was in the very next event, a Scratch heat won by Dubb Ferrell. This ba ck to ba ck riding tired him. After the in tennission when the track was watered, Division II Scratch heat riders just couldn 't get arou nd that first tum. Le o Black, Dick Pruitt and Wally J ann an dumped. On the restart Wally an d Chris Hain es, the on ly survivor of the firs t start, fell. On the third start everyone swu ng around the tum very carefully and stayed upright, until Dick Pruitt went down again just before the fin ish. In the second Division II Scratch Heat_Tommy Dickerson went all out bu t had a hard time in the turns with his taller skinner tires. swinging wider than the others. Porky McCabe fough t p ast him, to be ove rtake n by Sc ott Black in the last fewyards, In the first Match Rac e Dubb Ferrell led un til Mark Ch e rry go t the inside track in the last tum . Secon d m atch, Northern California fou gh t Southern California in the persons of Barclay Trehal and Randy Marsh. Trehal got inside 'a t the first tum , stayed ahead. Then in the last match Dave Sims (North) and Ron Preston (South ) changed leads several times with Preston pulling ahead a t the last. The Spectator 's Delight event really w as, as Fishback and Ferrell ' met and sparks flew. This c on tinu ed in the next event. the Scratch Semi, With Fishback leading, Randy Marsh and Trehal crashed to gether hard' on the first rum, Both bikes were damaged, Marsh barely ge t ti ng his go ing in time for the restart. Ferrell and Fishback c on ti nu ed their furious duel. Ferrell finally caught Fishback in the last turn, as Fishback crashed. After this, the second Scratch Semi was almost an anticlimax until Mark .Cherry almost ran down Dennis Sigalos on the last tum, finishing just a few inches be hind. Ferrelt"was first in the Div. I Scratch Main easily with a 3-way battle behind him , resolved when Cherry and Mar sh went d own . Fishback d id his magic again in th e Han dicap Co nso l fro m 60 yards back. Ferrell an d Pal mer then fo ught it ou t in the Handicap Main wi th th e stylish Palmer hanging on / to first for a lon g time, then appearing to tire, falling back, and finally downed by a hole in the west end of the track. Second night Saturday nigh t produced the expected larger cro wd including a young en thusiast with a "Fishbaek is first in Salt Lake City" sign . The track held up betler than anticipated, developing only a few small h ole s. R iders co m p e ted even more in tensely than on th e previou s night. caus ing a hi gher in cidence of cras hes on the narrow track. The pole o n the firs t tum had been moved in , n ot makin g it much eas ier. Ferrell had left and Bast arrived. _ Bast ran in the first Handicap Heat. predictably p assin g every on e from his 40 y ard line. Randy Marsh, who had worked on his bike Saturday, almost caugh t him. In the fourth Handicap Heat Tommy Dickerson spun out, crashing with Scott Black who suffered a broken collarbone. Mike Bendy caught his foot under the peg and was out for the rem ainder of the eve ning. Mar k Cherry, one of the men to watch both nigh Is , won. First upset o f the evening was the fi rs t Handicap Se m i. Ran dy Marsh skillfu lly kept to the pole, never allowing second an d third ru n ners Fishback and Bast to pass.
