second Divisi on II Scratch H eat th at
Tommy Dickerson had a new nickname,
Tumbling Tommy. Tommy therefore
postponed his tumble for that ev ent
until after the fin ish.
Bast took Fishback in the first Match
Race, Hood, who generally d idn't have a
very good knight (!) came from behind
to take his match race, and Porky
McCabe bested Tumbling Tommy who
this time refused to tumble at all.
Bast just couldn't be beaten in the
first Scratch Semi, or in the Scratch
Main. Fishback and Cherry fought over
second place, Fishback claiming it just
before the last tum. Marsh did it again
. in th e Handicap Main, Bast h avin g to
settle for second and Fishback for third.
Riders all enjoyed th e meet and
h oped to co m e back, saying it was th e
best temporary track they'd seen. The
sam e dirt will be s to red and us ed aga in.
The track will be twenty feet wider n ext
time, elimin atin g 'the bottom rows of
se ats.
In additi on to the cash awards of
$6 ,000 and trophie s donated by Terry
Nish, the Utah Bicentennial Commission
gave all the riders bronze bicentennial
medallions. Top riders each evening,
(like Ferrell, Bast, Marsh, and Chris
Haines), got silver medals. _
