The 125cc Juniors managed to go one lap before leader Mike Ragan (Suz) laid it down in tum one. Billy Wilson (Suz) missed the fallen leader but John Burnett (Suz) couldn't avoid contact and Ragan got nailed. The crash looked bad but after a small delay for Ragan and Burnett to regain their senses, both riders returned to the line for the restart. Billy Wil,son too k charge when the flag dropped again followed closely by Dennis Camp (Yam) and Rodger " Inghan (Yam). Camp took the lead on lap four ' an d put five bike lengths between himself and Wilson for the win. First tum casualty Ragan put the bite on Inghan for third on the last lap. Scott Dinkins (Suz) led a strong showing of 250cc Experts two laps until his Porterville buddy , Scott Podergois [Suz - who was right behind the entire time) pushed past starting lap three. Podergois added a little cushioning space and went on to win. Scott Din kins doubled, taking the 125cc Expert titles. Don Cantaloupi was running second with Kent Classen (Hon) holding down third. Classen put on a drive that had to be seen to be believed. Swooping by Cantaloupi.: he charged after Preston. After dicing momentarily with Preston he shot by into the lead . From then on it was Classen's moto, Wes Elrod jumped out to an early lead in the first moto of the 500 Pro class on his big Moto- Villa. Elrod has learned to ride the Villa rather well of late and is looking pretty hot. Following in second was Scott Cowan (Mai) and Gary Murphy on his Lofano and Sons backed Suzuki. Ron Self came from behind and moved into second. Self was not able to catch the flying Elrod and finished second with Scott Cowan third. In the second moto Ron Self.wasted no time in shooting out to an immedaite lead. Righ t behind Self was Charley Halcomb (Hus) who had trouble in the first moto and finished sixth. This time, however, Halcomb was on the zas, looking fast and smooth. He passed Self two laps before the end and with his previous finish ended up second overall to Ron Self. Glenn Stiefel (Mai) put together his 4, 6 placing to take third overall. • Hanford's speedway oval hosted several new riders this week, as rider graduations and injuries begin to change the starting lineups. Among the newer faces in roll ing in round one with a blazing holesho t o nly to have the race restarted. No problem for Geery ; he pulled the start again. Behind was a tight battle shaping up between Don Cantaloupi, Troy Deherrera (Yamjand Paul Turner (Suz). After several laps Deherrera moved into third, while up front Cantaloupi was really putting the screws to Dan veery. It took him a few laps to do it but Cantaloupi finally got by. handicap racing, Brian Bishop had a convincing win his first time ou r, In his first season in speedway and first time ever at Han ford, Mark atchison from Southern California was impressive. An aggressive rider, he made the Handicap Main and the King of the Hill contest. A spectacular spill, which cost him a broken finger, kept him out of the winner's circle this time.
