Bill Nayl or (Yam) pulled out a first overall wi th a 4-2 . Nay lor also was , first Old Timer. The local Pros weren't very h ospitable to our retu rnin g hero . Yamaha's Rick "Northwind" Burge tt was back for a few lo cal races and Mark Gregson (Kaw) blew h im away in both the 125 and 250 classes. The secon d 125 moto started with complete chaos in the first turn . Brian Hall (Suz) hooked bars with a competitor and went down in the center of the pack, There followed a chain reaction in every direction. Gregson came out in front and stayed there. Rick had to make up from a 12th place start to nab second. Ron Sun (Yam) and Kevin J an sen (Hon) were in a battle for fourth. Kevin had just passed Ron when he got sideways a bit and both went down. Kevin leap ed up and got his bike off the track and ran back to assure himself that .Ron was alright before resuming the race. Burgett was in full command of the Open class , as Gregson's bike gave up in the firs t mota. Chuck Sun (Hus) , also back from the Nationals, had recurring , chain problems in this race, In the fmal moto it was just like the "good old days" with Burgett and Sun out front. Barney Newman (Hus) followed them with a firm ho ld on second overall until the fmal lap when a flat tire slowed him to a fifth and Rod Kentner (Yam) moved u p to finish third for second • money. Pro 'Half-Mile in Oregon , By Lynne Diltz I ROSEBURG, ORE.,JULY 3 Ra i n agai n t hrea te ned, a nd as sprinkles came down, the three Expert heats were let out first. Novice heats and the rest of the evening left everyone- wondering what was corning next. Sixteen year old Rand y Mamola from Santa Clara, California put more points on his re cord winning a heat, TD points and a clean sweep in the Novice Main . Twelve Experts made the stands vibrate as they left the line for a 15 lap even t. Charlie Brown, Sonny Burres and _Ed Herrman le d the pack. Burres had the lead for eight laps but cou ldn ' t hold off Brown, who gets along quite well on the half-mile, Herman was forced to fourth by Randy Scott wh o broke free of the pack after two lap s and moved up rapidly. Modesto, California Junior Ted Davidson closed fast lap time of 22 .16 and picked up a few extra bucks 10 go along with his TD win and Main. • Results in Results Section. Bicentennial blast at Benton Lane Park By Lynne Diltz JUNCTION CITY, ORE.,JULY 4 Darwin Loesch started off the first event ' with a complete, wipe-out that also -downed Greg Grover and brought Darwin's mother charging down fro m her place in the tower. After a brief pause, Loesch was back on his bike and wen t on to a heat win, a T D win, and an A Main win . No t to be ou tdone was broth er Brian. As a Mini Ex pert, he took ho me a TD win , as we ll as the Main. A yo ung man coming on fast is Terry Phillips from Co quille. He left a secon d row start and came out of tum tw o in first place of the 125 heats an d .won the TD by fmishing ahead of Steve Lorraine and John Wincewicz. The Main was a close , crowded match with riders literally bouncing off the retaining walls and positions changin~ .so fas~ it dr ove
