Angel Nieto had b een quick est in b oth 50' and 125cc classes , but h e w as ca ught napping in the early stages of the 50cc even t, the opening race o f th e day . Nieto grabbed a consolation win in the 125 cc even t, which was switched in the running order to give riders who co mpe ted in both 250 and 5 00cc races a breather. P irp a o l o B ianchi on the works Morbidelli led the race for fo ur lap s, but th en he we nt o u t leavi ng h is teammat e to' handle Nieto, and he co uldn' t! Nieto was almost five seconds ah ead o f the italian , and this p air were in turn almos t a full min ute clear of third place man Eugen io Lazzarin. · Th e 5 0 0cc race w as cut from t w elve lap s to t en , after th e FIM Jury had dis cussed the safety problems of the . high speed eve nt. There co u ld n' t hav e bee n many p eople in th e ranks of com petitors, sp ec tat o rs or eve n p ress, wh o were not d elighted at the id ea. The race itself turned into a strictl y three ho rse aff ai r, w ith Sheene and Williams on th e works Suz u kis harrased b y the standard model of Marcel ' Ankone, William s led for th e first th ree laps, with Sh eene an d Ankone sharing runner up spo t, un til Sheene moved ahead on fo urth lap. But if h is fa ns thought that the race w as n ow o ver, th ey had second th oughts , for William s, n o t at all pleased in practic e when Sheene had loane d hi s sp ar e w orks mach in e t o Frenchman Michel R ouger ie, was out to show th at he was a valuable m ember of th e Suzuki ' squad. He an d Sh ee ne kep t swapping pl aces at the h ead o f th e p ack, and A nkone began to fall a little behind. Bu t then , wi th Williams regaini ng th e lead on the eighth lap , it loo ked lik e a close fin ish . But whe n J ohn eased off and lo ok ed over his shoulder at the La So urce hairpin , Sheene wasn ' t in sigh t . His misfire at low revs had co o ked a co up le of pl ugs and he was in tr oub le ! Williams was d ow n to ne ar walking pace as he crossed th e line , b ut barring ac t ually stopping to let Barry win, there was noth ing else he could d o ! Sh ee ne limped h ome second, m ore than seve n seconds behind Williams, wi th An kone nearly te n seconds behind Shecne , American Pa t Hen nen found the Spa circuit something of a .prob lem on his first visit.
