In the first co mer, Ferrell went low and took th e lead wi th Penhall, Shaw , and Bas t all trying the ou tside lin e for m or e traction. However, the one the y cal l " Dan gero us Dubb " was not t o be: denied. Bast suffered engine trouble. The Scratch Consolation was all Gene Woods of th e Sp rockets , as th e "Kid with No Respect" blew the rest of th e field in the weeds. Pla cing second was Cody followed by Sizzler Mark Cherry and Bak ersfield team captain Jeff Sexton. The Second Division Scratch Main went to Northern California's Tom Ferris with _ San Bernardino's Kurt Strommer and Rick Huckans following. Irwindale, July 15 One of the most important mat ches of th e NSL seaso n occu rr ed when t he leagu e-leading Bakersfield Bandits went to battIe with the sec ond pl ace Lo s Angeles Sprockets, Enterin g th e co n tes t, Digger Helm 's Bandits held a t h ree ga m e lead ov er the Spro ck ets. The match figured to be close all th e . . I th e 13 team events we re com ple ted . Led by th e leagu e 's t op two scorers, Mike Bast and Bru ce Penh all , th e Sp roc ke ts had bee n p ic king up wi ns, but jh e Bandits were tak ing seconds and th irds to eve n th e sc or e. In the 12th eve n t, Bast and his par tner, Gen e Woo d s, we nt up against " Dangerous" Dub b Ferre ll and his partner, Dan T oo mey . The mat ch was o n the' lin e wi th t he top sco rer s the n co m in g bac k in the final eve nt . Howeve r , Bast and Woo d s we re n ot about to let the m at ch go do w n to the fin al, as t he Sproc kets' p ai r, a.k.a. the " Dy nam ic Duo, " pulled off a clean sweep wi th Wo ods taking the victory followed by Bas t , Fe rre ll , a nd Too mey. For th e Ban d its to p u ll out a victory, they had to sweep the final, and the n win a runo ff. The Ban di ts had Brian Short and Steve Nutter returning t o do battle w it h Bas t and Pen hall. The od ds see med t o be stacked again st th e Bandits, as th e Sprocke ts have on ly lost t he final eve n t a t Irwindale once this year. Again Bast and Penhall pulled out the clean sweep for the eigh th t im e this year, and the Sprockets had put away the Bandits for the se cond t ime this season by a score of 43-35. In th e Handicap Main, Kevin MacDonald from New Guinea, in his first Division One race at Irwindale, held off the challenges of Gene Woods to capture the five -lap feature. Woods, who had won the Handicap heat and semi quite easily from the 30-yard line, rode the outside groove to perfection , but lost t ract io n in the final. Costa Mesa, Ju ly 16 By Dennis Greene The Eagles flew high while th e Orange County Fair pl ayed in the background. The L. A. Irwindale Sp roc kets had beate n the Eagles several times in a row d thei 43 a 3 . sa y t he least. They never got the points lead, even with a clean sweep in thel2th race . Bill Cody and Alan Christian led the points ra ce for the Eagles. Six times the score was split even and twice the Eagles took first 'an d second, alway s holding on to at least a four-point lead. Channel 7 filmed the first half of the show and it will be on Eyewitness News Wednesdy and Thursday this week. . $200 of Select Vans money went to Alan Christian for his outstanding ride from the 50-yard line in the Handicap Main. His win was the highlight of _a hard night of racing that saw Jan Ballard get his wrist broken in a Four-man pileup , More Select Vans money was taken home b y Tom Burba for his win in the Divisi on T wo Handicap Main.
