Alex was pressured hard by Da ve Fari a wh o tried to slip under on the concession tum but didn't - get quite en ough drive. Both riders were under th e 16 second bracket. At almost every t um, friends with pails of water were throwing cups full as th e boys went b y to ' try to ke ep them a little co o l. As usual the water missed them m ost o f the time, but t hey had a lot of fu n trying. However, th ere was a goo d crowd present and th e Girl Watch ers had a fi eld d ay. 1 think a few words o f ap preciation are in order for th e fine ambulance crews. The thriller race came in the last mota in the 25 0 Expert class. Bill McEl m urray took the lead, closely followed by A lan Griswold. They pulled away from the pack and passed an d repassed each other at least five times. In the las t lap Bill wen t a lit tl e wide on a tum, and Alan grabbed the lead for the win. A good one. • Dale Bernards twice at Asbury By Chuck Iken ALB ANY, ORE. ,J UNE 2 3 Dale Bern ards (Yam) of Salem, Oregon was hot on the throttle tonight in both of his classes, the 100 Junior and Open, taking first in each class. Brother Gary Bernards scored a se co nd in the 250 class . Craig Lambert (Yam) had a goo d race going with John Buyas (Yam) in th e Expert Mini class. In the second mota John had gotten behind and was turning some pretty mean and fast laps on this small tight co u rse. Just in front of the high ju m p on th e front straightaway he crashed hard, tearing off his gas tank and bending his bars but was up and not seriously hurt, o nly disgusted with hi mself. Also scoring a double win to n ight was Mike McCormick (Yam ) of Corvallis, Oregon: in both the 100 and 125 Expert classes. In the final 12 5 mota, his las t race of the evening , Mike go t the ho leshot off the line and started to 'str e tch his lead when all of a sudden his strength and endurance seemed to start fading.
