T he desert h ea t was just re ac h ing it s peak whe n the Open class started off. On t he exciting first loop of th e Amateur /Expert r ace , Mitch Mayes (Hus ) and Bill Saltzman (Hus ) were di cing it out as t hey gassed it past th e sp ec ta to rs. Ba kk en o n his ne w Suzuki. Bob Gilb ert (KT M) finished firs t Open Amateur, wi th J im Pay to n (Hus) an d Jerry Sill (Ya m ) second and third respectivel y. T he C bi kes stormed off t he sta rt lin e at 10 :00 a. m. Mik e Matlo ck (Yam) t o o k th e overall win for the Ex perts , follo wed by pie-plater Mark Bar nes (KT M), an d Ru ss J e nkins (Hu s) t oo k third First Amateur was Mit c h Pa y t on (Hu s), second goi ng to J im No rris (Suz) an d th e third p osi tio n won b y Louis Norton (Yam). Bar bara T ies koetter (Suz) took th e checkered flag fo r th e Wo m e n' s Divisio n, followed .b y Lynne tt e Zub er I I May es (H us) h it th e 500 Ama te ur/Expe rt st ar t running third behind Cordis Bro oks (Bul) an d J eff Kir k (Yam) . Soon he h ad m oved past Kirk a nd closed o n Bro oks. Th e p ass ca me as th e two were p owering up a gn ar ly san dwash. Bro oks gave chase for a while, b u t h ad to back o ff wh en t he rear tire went fl at. Mit ch led th e rest of th e way, with a good lead on run ners-up Kirk and Morgan Mal o cco (Yam). Other th an tiring hi s h ands o n the Vip er s' lon gish (fo r a Eu ro pean Scrambles) 16-mile co u rse, Mit ch felt he'd h ad a good race. He won again over o n th e Ra m ble r's side. Bob G ilbe rt, on one of th e ne w KT Ms, took first Ama te u r wi th a hi gh overall pl aci ng. ' Larry Ro cseler, Mayes' Husky team m ate, took the win in the 250 Amate ur/Expert clash . Roeseler did no t have a good start, taking several kicks to get underwa y. Wh ile h e was run ning in t he twenties at the start, Brent Wa llingsford, making his first a ppearance on a Husky. l\lar c Cartwright (KT l\I). an d Bo b Ru tte n dueled for the lead. Wall in gsfo rd kept it for th e first lo op , holdi ng off Ru tte n b y ta king the good lines on t he b ump y ' co urse. J ust before th e e nd o f t he first lo op, Roeseler was b y everyone but Wall ingsford. Moving o u t ' on to the second loo p , Roeseler got by an d p ull ed away to win handily. Walli ngsford to ok second, wi th Cartwrigh t th ird At seventh overal l, Br uce Jones (KTM) was first A mateur. In Division II ac tion, Ru ss J enki ns (Ya m ) follo wed Am ateur Mitch Payto n (Hus) for about 12 miles, then p assed hi m and took his fi rst Ex pert victo ry. Ed Rodine (Yam) also go t b y Payto n , but Mitch took the Amate ur lau rels. Amateur Rusty Bla ke (Yam) b attled with Bruce Ogilv ie (Yam) for th e 100 A mate ur/Ex pert win , a nd was leading o n the fir st loo p. Ogilvie ac q ui re d a fl a t in the ear ly goi ng , b ut was still firs t into t he finish . But, th e Vipers had caug h t him us in g an illegal firero ad an d di squal ified him. Blak e got the wi n wi t h a fi ne ride, an d Dar en Kelse y (Ya m) was in nex t for first Exper t. Nobody was surprised th at T rudy Beck (KT M) had a b ig Jea d on the fir st loop of · the \Y omen' s Division race, d espite stalling off the lin e. T rud y h ad a flaw less ride , finish ing wi t h a h ealthy lead over Barbara Tioes ke tter (Suz). A t th ird, June Elias (Yam) too k fi st r Amateur. Juanit a Morris (Yam) finished sixth ove rall, fir st Novice. The Senior Division race was j ust like the b a ttle, for firs t overall in a b ig race a year or two ago . Smokebomb Gaetz (Yam) and Art Kn app (H us) duel ed , with Kn app wi n ning. Jack Fr o elich (25 0 Yam ) was third. Amateur Arnie Armstrong (Ya m ) and Novice Alan Jo hnson (Yam) led th eir co lo r-ba r divisions to th e finish. In Novi ce ac t io n, Ric hard Bax ter (Ya m ) started off t he morning with a 50 0 No vi ce win. Mike Midkiff (Yam) had a good time, winning the 17 5 No vice eve n t , while Bruce Elery (Yam) had h is way with th e 100 class.
