S.L's top two scorers, Mike Bast an d Bruce Penhall, the Sp rockets o u ts cor ed the Sizzlers nine to three in th e final two races to secure the win, an d mo ve t heir record to 12-9 .in the league. Bast, the current National champion, led th e final charge fo r the Los Angeles sq uad, as Mike teamed with yo u ng Gene Woods to pick u p four poin ts to the Sizz lers' t wo mar kers fro m Mar k Cherry, and t he 33-33 deadlock was bro ken a t 37-35. In the five- lap Handicap Main, Tom Morley scored an u p se t , as the Topanga rider picked up the victory in his very first main eve nt in division one. Morley also received some luck on his way to the win, as Penhall, who was by far the fastest rider in the feature, was running second when he slid out in the third turn. Dennis Sigalos had nowhere to go and laid down his machine. That then left Morley with a quarter of a lap lead. Irwindale, July 8 Mike Bast and Bruce Penhall again led their team to victory over the Orange County Eagles, 45-33, as eacb picked up the maximum point total of 15. For Bast, it was his sixth maximum performance of the season at Irwindale, and Bast's home average is an incredible 14.38 points per meeting. For the one they call "Su per Bruce," it was his fifth max effort on the Irwindale oval, and Penhall then went on to capture the Handicap Main from the 50 -yard line, Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Alan Christian with Woods and Bill Cody each co llecting seven. I I Costa Mesa, July 9 By Dennis Greene Eagles a r e an en dangere d species; The Eagles of Orange Co u nty of the National Speedway League are in last place, losing at h ome to the Bakersfiel d Ban dits. Bu t then everyone loses to the Bandits. T he firs t four eve nts loo ked like there m igh t be some hope, with a two-point lead fo r the Eagles. The Bandi ts tied up the score in Event Five and too k over the lead in the Six th. The Eagles fought back, tieing u p the score in Eve nt Nine, holding on in Ten then saw victory go out the window when S teve Nu tter an d Bert Harkins got a clean swcep fo r the Bandits. J u st to make sure, Jeff Sexton a nd Bria n Short pulled off another clean ' sweep, m ovin g the Bandits out in fro nt by eight points. Even though the Bandits had left them with no possible way to win, the Eagles came on strong in the final eve nt, pulling off a sweep as A lan Christian took the win and Bill Cody second. Final score, Bandits 41, Eag les 37. . Mike Mun tean led the Handicap half of the show, picking up the win in the Main over Alan Christian. Division Two honors went to Bryan Buffington 111. Bakersfield , July 10 By Dennis Greene The fourth running of the Firecracker Derby was run one week late due to rider injuries. The top 16 riders in the National Speedway League were invited to compete. The current and three-time V.S. National Champ, Mike Bast, was on hand. . All championship events are run the same ; each rider gets five rides in 20 events. Three points for the wi n , two fo r second, one fo r third and zero for fourth is h o w each race is scored. A perfect score, winning every event, was t urned in by Mike Bast with 15 points. Bruce Penhall lost only one poin t all n ight a nd that was to Bas t. Bruce took second with 14 points a nd J eff Sexton was th ir d with II. The Fi recrac ker Derby was ru n as the second h al f of the show, rep lacing the usual H an di cap p ro gr am . The Bandits of Bakersfield, still the League-leading team, did it again at home.
