AME Pros hot for cool $2000 , By Ted Titmas VALENCIA, CAL., jUNE 27 Despite unbearable heat, lo ts of top riders and big te ams turned out for AME's $2000 purse race . U.S. Suzuki, with no less than six riders, domina ted the scene, along with Whedsmith, Mid-Valley , Cole Bros., Steve 's Bultaco and ~assets. The [ [ 4 fa ctor in th is ra ce and endurance played an important role in the Pros 45-minute motos. In the 25 0 Pr o race Bob Elli o t , riding a factory Suzuki, claimed the win. A new recruit for Mid -Vall ey, Greg Robertson , switched from his factory Can-Am to a new Ossa and finished second. Something interesting to watch for will be th e probable teaming of Robertson and Mid -Valley's Kenny Zahrt fo r the Nationals. Hal Strauss rode a fine race taking third overa ll on his Cole Bros. Maico . Eddie Cole (Bul) held the lead in the first mota, followed by Bob Elliot (Suz) and Ke nny Zahrt (O ssa ). It was between the seco nd two riders th at the battle really began as Co le opened up his lead . just when it loo ked as th ough Co le had it wrapped u p , a lapped rider got in his way and he went down. Elliot m o ved in to the lead with Kenny still in hot pursuit. By the time Cole was a ble to re -st art his bike he was half a lap behind, in dead last.
