Snarr applied co ns t an t pressure and tried to cat ch Preston. T owards the end it looked like he might be a ble to do it but Pre st on won with a few seconds. V oss took a back seat behind WFO Flyer Pat J acobson from the fall of the gate but eased on b y as Jacobson rode it out when an axle split after a jump. The fight was between Fly in' Ed Davis and Roland .. Red" Miller for second as Davis slid around the last tu rn a nd held off Miller at the flag in moto one . After a restart in moto two they were at it again - with Voss up front J aco bso n (Hon) back in , thanks to a quick fix -it c rew .iand Gary Racca (Hon) pressin ' al l the wa y. Miller and Davis (Hon ) followed in next and scored up enough for second a nd th ird overall. Canadian National Sidecar Championship By Wayne Henderson WEsnl'OOD, B.C.,J U NE 13 Lending further evidence to the rumor that sidecars are coming of age, five Californ ia teams from the AFM traveled north this wee kend to participate in the first round of t he Can adian National Championship. The trip, recip ro cat ing t he participation of the Can ad ian outfits in the U.S. Champions hip held at Laguna Seca, see med well wo rth the effo rt. Practice Saturd ay was very low key , with the vario us teams sorting o ut jetting an d gearing on the pictu resque b u t tigh t 1. 8 mil e track. It was also wet and so me of t he team s spen t m ore time th an usu al slipp ing an d sliding. T he general consens us hel d t hat the final results would have been dras t ica lly diffe rent if this weather had contin ue d. H owever, Sunday dawned cloudy a nd threatening but remain ed dry . As t he flag fell for th e firs t of tw o ten lap heats the spectato rs witnessed a tr uly classic start. Sto rming t oward the firs t turn literally only in ches separated the entire field. First into the stee ply banked righ t hander was the Auer / Garn e t team , followed by last yea r's runners-up Coleman /Andrews (a U.S. team sponsored b y Continental Cycle of Vedder Crossing, B.C.), close behind ca me th e c urren t c ha m p s Wildm an /Lloyd, then Hudson / MacKen zie , Marcs/ Foresman, and Lougee/Gipe. As they crossed start/finish for the third lap Colem an /Andrews had a small but co m fo rtable lead over Lougee /Gipe, who would not have even m ad e the race without the quick repair work of me chanic Randy Hough. But the real race was the very close fo ur-way d ice for third. This was soon to become th ree-way , however, whe n Marcs' front , t ire b lew u nd er heavy braking go in g into the seco nd corner. At , 90 m p h the sideca r m ade a sharp left turn , flipped twice an d landed on t he infield. Both m en were taken to the hospital bu t returned not 10 0 much th e worse for wear. On the last lap Auer/G arnet's clutch fin all y went awa y a nd gave Wildman /Llo yd third o verall.
