Karsmakers didn 't make it to West Germany; he was in Am eri ca racing a Na t i o n a l Ch a mp ionship contest for the U.S . 500cc title. Lack of : ain throughout the ~ason in exception. As the fi rst lap lead ers flew in to view. it was Noyce out ahead with Sigman s second. Eastw ood th ird and VanVelthoven fourth, Weil fifth and front wheel was in trouble. He still had a twenty second lead on Sigmans as he je tted back int o the race still in first place after telling George that he must have a new fr ont wheel in order to finish, Graham's front wheel busted up more and he rode in to retire, deciding that to change th e front wheel would take a minute or so and that would surely put him out of touch with the leading riders. Christer Hammergren retired when he lost the use of hi. righ t hand as a result of a crash the week before in France. ~olsink made a lap two n inth place charge to ta ke the lead on lap ten but he fo und himself in quick company with Wei! and DeCoster in second and third after Adolf had passed Van Veithoven and Roger had slipped past Brad and Jaak. . Frans .Sigmans was finally forced to retire on lap eleven when the spokes on his front wheel started snapping off. Two Maicos out. On the same lap the last of the big gun Maicos went out but Adolf did it the hard way. Approaching a corner wide open in fifth gear his carb slide stuck and Wei! flew off the course through the tape barrier and crashed heavily into small trees and bushes.
