He had lost a chain on a hard charge from the 40 in the previous race. Vic Robledo won the J un io r Main with Lo uis Kossuth taking a hard spill in his charge fr om the 50 yard handicap. By Phil Carpenter SAN DIEGO, CAL.,JUNE 19 AFM pavement scratchers at Ontario By Jim Lester ONTARIO, CAL., JUNE 20 AMA Expert Mike Baeder was among the 200-plus racers who came out to Ontario Sunday for AFM's road race, rather than trek 16 across coun try for the Louden National. He was also among a half-dozen 250 GP ra cers wh o challenged the 750s in the lead-off race, 350-0pen GP. While Richard Williamson and Richard Seifried ch ased the rapidly disappearing 750 Kawasaki o f Whitney Blakeslee, Baeder moved from the back of the pack to fourth by the end of the first :ap . By the fourth lap Baeder had passed the TZ-750s of Seifried and Williamson after some daring infield scratching. Two laps later he had cut Blakeslee's lead in half, but high track temperatures had caused Mike's tires to overheat and the bike began to get in to some vicious slides. Mike decided to pull out and save himself and his bike for the upcoming 250 GP. Current AFM Points leader Dan Spisak was determined to compliment his 500 GP win (on an overbored Yamaha 350) with a double in the 125 GP. Philippe de Lespinary had other ideas, though, and the two battled for the lead the entire race, with Philippe passing Dan for good two laps from the finish. AFM No. One. It was the first time out for flat tracker Pat Guthrie, He won his heat and then a second in the main with Frank Bollinger finishing third. Bobby Morse held off the third division consolation right up to the last com er where he crashed with a clear lead. William Slin b came from a sent the starter running for his life at practice. and rode full throttle till midnite at 395 Cycle Park! _ Randy Bird and his flying machine led Dylan Neihart's Yamaha for four laps in the 250 Expert Half-Mile Main ahead of the Bakersfield Bomb, Lee Hales. Bird flew to victory in TT action with Neihart and Bill Cain in his shadow. In separate 250 · Amateur action, it was David DeTemple grabbing the lead from Ms. Bobbi Hunter on the half-mile and Scott Thurlow stealing her TT trophy, with hard-driving Greg J oh ns on . taking two thirds, Steve Mott an d Mike DeBruyn made Rick Blankenship earn his 250 Novice brass with J im Bland waiting fo r a mistake on the half-mile. Lou Gimenez got a first place trophy for Father's Day. even if he did finish third behind those faithful fighters Bob Bell and David Peters in both Open Novi ce classes. Son John gave him his win in separate 500 competition.
