(Below ) Gary Denton blasts through AMC's Sunday go . 14 The 25 0 Novices provided m ore entertainment, th e three leaders, joe Steffen , Mitch Zehner and Scott Polson all on ' Yamahas really mix ed it up with Gary Smith and Steve Colford always right there to p ick up a place. In the first moto Steffen was really skiddin' the turns, including one lap where he cam e through completely sideways. The 250 juniors and Experts ran together and everytime it was Dorothy Rowe out of the hole first ; she must be able to read rubber bands bu t by the time the back section was reached the other shoes had gotten by her. In the first tw 0 motos it was open warfare between Eddie Beeson and Mike Tidwell wi th Larry Bird just a whisker off the rear wheel of whoever happened to be in second at the ti me . Tidwell did it with a second and two firsts, Beeson second with a first , second and a fifth and Greg Zehner emerged third. Larry Bird had two thirds, but in the last round overdid it in the far section and landed on his rump, go t going and jus t for the she er fun o f it cam e down through part of the infield behind the pack, leaping high over the motocross jumps. The tiddler bikes might h ave thought . it slick but they don' t know the joys of trying to keep a big banger un der con trol, and quite a few big bores bit the dust. Ed Drechsler's Norton decided it didn"t want any part of the heat (Lucas electrics strike again ) and jim Redding (Yam ) won the junior class with a firs t , third and a second. Skidding right alo ng with h im at ' all times was Gordie Kidd who got a second and a first then locked up and enjoyed a scary trip through the infield in the last round . Wayne Melanson (Yam) came in third just behind Gordie in points. Again, it was a big bike turnout and we hope new things are blowing in the wind. The 500-Op en Novices actually had enough to run a progressive program. Dewayne Rocke (Yam ) won th e first heat and went on to win the race the troops had a bit of fall then another was left asleep at the switch on the line . Earl Parker (Yam ) got second which developed into a bit of a procession be cause of track condi ti ons but the only big twin out there, a Triumph ridden by Bob Bill did a nifty job in working up to' a fourth overall. T-Bone Grigsby took one of his rare . fall s in the Open Expert IlTSt moto when his Goodyear lost traction at the top of the hill and that put him back to a ninth. In the next twomotos he got a first and a second going after Rex Hailey on a 50 OTT, who did well for himself with two firsts and a second. • Results in Results Section. Secondly , the track was great th roughout most of the day, with soft berms and a loamy, sandy surface. US Suzuki's Bob Elliott completely ran awa y with the 250 Pro race, leaving Steve Rhyan (CoA), jeff Vidic (Mai) and Chris Burgerson (Suz) to decide on second. Bill Glore smoked the 125 Pro division and Gaylon Mosier held off a hard charge fro m Gary Sernics and Chu ck Lampe to win the Open Pro class . As the gate slammed to the ground, the 500 Pros were led by Chuck Lampe (Mai) , Mike Gilman (Suz ), japan's Taicano (Suz) and Brad McMartin. Both Gary Sernics and Gaylon Mosier tangled together on the first lap and dropped to the ~id pack. While Lampe was
