The valley's top racer (in all types of racing) will receive a set of gold plates corresponding with his District 36 assigned number for 1977, a jacket with proper insignia, and free -entry to all valley race tracks for 1977. Lodi Friday night Lodi had a less than pleasing opening night as the Open Expert Main was protested for the second year in a ro w and the track was extremely narrow and slick fo r a n igh t event. The Open win was not co n tested as Daly City's Rick Raanes led all the way, but Alex J orgen sen in third m ade a rare ju dgme nt error as he attempted to slip un der Bob Masters in the sweeper turn. Traction was no t there and both racers bai led. In the process Rick Otto slipped off his mount temporarily but co ntinued quickly and comp le ted the lap . In the referee's j udgme nt t he rac e was stopped for J orgy and Masters so their positions were eliminated from the previous lap and Broderick's J o hn Fite and Otto , running fourth and fifth were awarded the payoff spots. Another rider felt Otto should have been scratched; thus the protest. D·36 officials will se ttle this one . New trophy faces : Sean Guthrie took his second win in the 80 Novice class while the no longer controversial Ron Heath Honda (deemed legal last Monday) again captured the 200 class . T he Arnaiz Construction Co. Hon da ridden by the last of the Arnaiz brothers blitzed the 125 Novices and should put Ric ha rd in the Junior ranks. San Jose's Ti m Hlebo won his fourth in a row at Lodi so he shouldn't be a Novice much lon ger . New highs at Mt.View By Jan Newman SANDY, O RE . , JUNE 6 Mt. View Cycle Park ·has a couple of new uphill jumps whic h created a lot of apprehe nsio n at first glance. Once p ractice got under way they proved to be popular with everyone. Those riders who felt spooked . found they co uld roll over the top easily, Spectators and shutterbugs were delighted with the ones who left the handle on . Some of them attained enough alt itude to require a pilot's license . The Mini riders didn't use the new jumps. Jim Raynor took the IIfSt mo to win but was droppe d to second when Darrin Walz (Yam) ca me o ut on top of the next two. Dann y Maggs (Suz) led the first 125 J un ior m oto un til the third lap wh en he mad e a spectacular two-p oint lan d ing off one of the new ju mps. Fortunately the t wo p oin ts were his feet. Th is was but th e star t of a bad day for hi m. Mar k J o hnson (Suz) took the lead briefl y bu t yielded to Ron. Lu tman . Dan T homas (Yam) ba re ly . squeaked by Johnson at th e flag.
