Ogilvie on time at Cactus Cats Hare Scrambles By John Moray TRONA ROAD, CAL.,JUN E 20 - Most riders agree th at if they had a sm all he ad start, they could win any desert race, but Bruce Ogilvie really sm ok ed it, a fter having to be pushed off th e st artin g line, and cam e through for an im pressive win. First through the home check on th e first loop , Brent Wallingsford led Ogilvie by a half a mile, but had to retire due to a flat ti re . Ogilvie took over the lead followed by a fast heavyweight amateur, Ray led Ogilvie and J .C. Ray. Wallin gsford for a part of the first loop, b ut .gave way to unrelenting pressure. The tough 4D-mil e lo op took its toll, but mo st riders agreed that the course was fun and fast. In the overall standings there were many 'goo d rid es attributed t o a fast well marked course. Ho yt Statham , on a Yarnaha, finished second 250 Expert and 15th overall, closely followed by Don Shatto also o n a Yamaha. Then Ray Alexander on ana ther Yamaha, fell into place next. The best fmish of the day has to go to Don Wallingsford, who hadn't ridden a ra ce for three y ear s, gassing it to fifth overall, second Heavyweight. . In the Novice classes, first Heavyweight. went to Ted Overholt, followed closely by Joe Whitlow, who fmish ed 51st overall. On su ch a fast co urse, the . Heavyweights are supposed to takeove r hands down. But you . cou ldn 't prove it by t alking to Chuck Cartiledge ,. who slipped in for 10th overall, first Trail Expert. Jeff Kaplan also challenged that theory , b y storming in 12th overall, first 175. He was contested hotly by Bill Eise le, who cam e in at 13th overall, second 175 Expert. The 250 class was won by Mick Thorp. The most surprised racer of the d ay was Juanita Morris, a Novice in the girl's division, as she finished 124th overall and first girl overall. She sa id she was just trying to make it t o t he fini sh, when her brother came out about five miles on the course and paced her the rest of the way. • Results in Results Section.
