Ogilvie on time at
Cactus Cats Hare
Scrambles
By John Moray
TRONA ROAD, CAL.,JUN E 20 -
Most riders agree th at if they had
a sm all he ad start, they could win
any desert race, but Bruce Ogilvie
really sm ok ed it, a fter having to
be pushed off th e st artin g line, and
cam e through for an im pressive win.
First through the home check on th e
first loop , Brent Wallingsford led Ogilvie
by a half a mile, but had to retire due to
a flat ti re . Ogilvie took over the lead
followed by a fast heavyweight amateur,
Ray led Ogilvie and
J .C.
Ray.
Wallin gsford for a part of the first loop,
b ut .gave way to unrelenting pressure.
The tough 4D-mil e lo op took its toll,
but mo st riders agreed that the course
was fun and fast.
In the overall standings there were
many 'goo d rid es attributed t o a fast
well marked course. Ho yt Statham , on a
Yarnaha, finished second 250 Expert
and 15th overall, closely followed by
Don Shatto also o n a Yamaha. Then
Ray Alexander on ana ther Yamaha, fell
into place next.
The best fmish of the day has to go
to Don Wallingsford, who hadn't ridden
a ra ce for three y ear s, gassing it to fifth
overall, second Heavyweight.
. In
the
Novice
classes,
first
Heavyweight. went to Ted Overholt,
followed closely by Joe Whitlow, who
fmish ed 51st overall. On su ch a fast
co urse, the . Heavyweights are supposed
to takeove r hands down. But you
. cou ldn 't prove it by t alking to Chuck
Cartiledge ,. who slipped in for 10th
overall, first Trail Expert. Jeff Kaplan
also challenged that theory , b y
storming in 12th overall, first 175. He
was contested hotly by Bill Eise le, who
cam e in at 13th overall, second 175
Expert. The 250 class was won by Mick
Thorp.
The most surprised racer of the d ay
was Juanita Morris, a Novice in the girl's
division, as she finished 124th overall
and first girl overall. She sa id she was
just trying to make it t o t he fini sh,
when her brother came out about five
miles on the course and paced her the
rest of the way.
